Biography
California's alt-metal quintet Ultraspank originally consisted of Jerry Oliviera (guitars), Dan Ogden (bass), Pete Murray (vocals/programming), Neil Godfrey (guitars/programming), and Tyler Clark (drums). Emerging from the remnants of the early '90s speed metal band Indica formed by Clark, Ogden, and Murray—the group that earned MTV's Best College Rock Band honors in 1992—the musicians adopted the name Spank in 1995 after adding Godfrey and Oliviera and turning toward groove-oriented rock. Copyright conflicts forced another name change to Ultraspank at the moment of their 1996 Epic signing. The self-titled debut album followed in 1998, accompanied by shows with Sevendust, Soulfly, Incubus, Korn, and Rob Zombie plus a slot on that year's OzzFest tour, yet the record never charted despite the extensive roadwork. Clark exited, with James "Fed" Carroll stepping in on drums. Ultraspank issued their second album, Progress, in May 2000 while sharing stages with Static-X and Slipknot.
