The Exies derive their name from a shortening of "Existentialists" and combine raw edges with melodic elements drawn from post-grunge, alternative rock, nu-metal, and hard rock. Their approach merges the structural intensity associated with Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins alongside the melodic songwriting sensibility of the Beatles. Recognition first arrived in 2003 through the second album Inertia, anchored by the hit single "My Goddess," and continued with the 2004 release Head for the Door. After an extended absence the group reconvened in 2023 and delivered the EP Closure the following year.

Formation occurred in 1997 inside Los Angeles’s active rock community, featuring Scott Stevens on vocals and guitar, Freddy Herrera on bass, and Thom Sullivan on drums. Guitarist David Walsh entered the lineup by 1998, while Sullivan’s departure in 2000 brought Dennis Wolfe into the drum chair. The self-titled debut album appeared in March 2000. Two years afterward a Virgin Records agreement enabled touring with Thirty Seconds to Mars; Inertia followed several months later and its lead track "My Goddess" registered strongly on modern rock radio. Head for the Door surfaced in 2004, its single "Ugly" quickly resonating on modern rock formats before becoming World Wrestling Entertainment’s theme for the Survivor Series 2004 pay-per-view. Nikki Sixx personally chose the band for Mötley Crüe’s Carnival of Sins tour, and the album’s second single "Hey You" was placed on the Guitar Hero video game soundtrack.

Virgin ended the relationship upon the band’s return from touring, after which Walsh and Wolfe departed. Longtime acquaintance Chris Skane joined on guitar, allowing the remaining members to continue as a trio. Seeking an album of "beauty and destruction," they entered the studio in spring 2006 under producer James Michaels, whose credits include Buckcherry and Deftones. A Modern Way of Living with the Truth emerged in 2007 on Eleven Seven, featuring the single "Different Than You" together with a cover of Talking Heads’ "Once in a Lifetime."

Following a 15-year hiatus, "Spirits High" appeared in 2023 as the driving, uplifting lead single from the EP Closure issued the next year.
