Biography
Formed in 2001 in Baltimore, Maryland, the American modern rock quintet Ashes Remain fuses post-grunge, post-hardcore, and soaring alt-rock textures throughout its faith-based body of work. Josh Smith and Ryan Nalepa launched the project after crossing paths at a summer youth camp; by 2003 Rob Tahan, Jonathan Hively, and Ben Kirk had joined, expanding the lineup to five members and prompting the independent issuance of the debut album Lose the Alibis. Bassist Ogden departed the next year and was succeeded by Jon Hively, whose first studio appearance came on the 2007 release Last Day Breathing. The EP Red Devotion surfaced in 2009, after which the band signed with the Tennessee-based CCM imprint Fair Trade Services in 2010; that association yielded the third full-length album, 2011’s What I’ve Become. A holiday-themed EP followed the subsequent year, while Let the Light In—the ensemble’s initial project for the Tooth & Nail subsidiary BEC Recordings—emerged in 2017.
