Biography
Toby McKeehan, recognized professionally as TobyMac, stands out as a Dove- and Grammy-winning pioneer in Christian alternative and rap sounds, both through his individual releases and his foundational role in the acclaimed rap and rock trio dc Talk. After delivering his first solo project, Momentum, during 2001, he maintained a consistent output of gold-certified albums, among them Portable Sounds from 2007, the Billboard 200 number one Eye on It in 2012, and Life After Death in 2022, each securing the summit of Christian charts while resonating equally with mainstream and faith-oriented listeners. He further issued isolated singles such as the 2024 track "Nothin' Sweeter."
Raised in the Northern Virginia suburbs near Washington, D.C., Toby McKeehan developed an early passion for rap music. During his time at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, in the mid-1980s, he connected with Michael Tait and Kevin Max Smith, later known as Kevin Max, and together the three launched the Grammy-winning, platinum-selling Christian pop ensemble dc Talk, which blended CCM, grunge, and rap influences. Following the group's conclusion in 1999, McKeehan launched a solo path marked by stylistic range and broad commercial achievement.
His opening solo album, Momentum, appeared in 2001. Blending urban rock with rap elements, it earned five Dove Awards plus a Grammy nomination while generating the remix collection Re: Mix Momentum that surfaced in 2003. Retaining a comparable approach and incorporating touches of dancehall reggae, McKeehan put out Welcome to Diverse City in 2004. The effort again proved effective, securing him a Dove Award in the Rap/Hip-Hop Album of the Year category. A further full-length remix package, Renovating->Diverse City, followed in 2005. Portable Sounds arrived in 2007, offering listeners another energetic fusion of genres and entering the Billboard 200 at position ten. Four tracks from it, among them the Kirk Franklin and Mandisa collaboration "Lose My Soul," climbed Billboard's Top Christian Songs chart. The two-disc live recording Alive and Transported came next in 2008.
McKeehan sustained his momentum into the following decade. Tonight, issued in 2010, opened at number six on the Billboard 200 and captured a Dove Award for Rock/Contemporary Album of the Year. After Christmas in DiverseCity and Dubbed and Freq'd: A Remix Project, he unveiled his fifth studio album, Eye on It, in 2012. Always open to fresh sonic directions, he wove EDM-style dubstep into the project, which reached the pinnacle of the Billboard 200 and received the 2013 Grammy for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album. He revived his remix series with the companion set Eye'm All Mixed Up: Remixes in 2014.
New material surfaced during his 2014 Worship, Stories, and Song Tour, leading to the single "Beyond Me" at the start of 2015. His sixth album, This Is Not a Test, arrived that August, again leading Christian charts while peaking at number four on the Billboard 200, and it claimed the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album. The concert release Hits Deep Live documented shows from an arena tour that began in spring 2016, appearing in both audio and video editions that November.
TobyMac resurfaced in October 2018 with his eighth studio album, The Elements, which he helmed alongside David Garcia and Bryan Fowler. Powered by the single "I Just Need U," the record topped the Christian albums chart and reached the Top 20 of the Billboard 200. Two years afterward he released the EP of unreleased demos titled The Lost Demos. The next year brought the poignant single "Help Is on the Way (Maybe Midnight)," written in remembrance of his son Truett McKeehan, who passed away in 2019. Further Christian Top Ten entries such as "Promised Land" and the number-one "The Goodness" featuring Blessing Offor cleared the path for his subsequent album, Life After Death in 2022. It marked his sixth straight studio LP to attain the peak of the Top Christian Albums chart. Promotion extended through 2023, after which TobyMac issued the lighthearted standalone single "Nothin' Sweeter" in June 2024.
