Beginning his path as a behind-the-scenes performer and in-house songwriter, Michael W. Smith built a substantial and enduring presence among the leading figures in Christian music. The West Virginia native additionally achieved broader recognition through several non-religious and adult contemporary projects, most notably the 1991 crossover single “Place in This World.” During the 2000s he maintained a commanding position in the Christian market via numerous live worship recordings, instrumental works, and CCM albums, nearly all of which reached the top of Christian charts while also registering notable placements on the Billboard 200. A series of Grammy Awards and repeated GMA Dove Award nominations preceded his 2009 induction into the Gospel Hall of Fame. The next ten years followed a comparable pattern, marked by additional chart-topping releases such as the 2014 album Sovereign, the publication of motivational books, and occasional acting roles including a part in the 2015 film 90 Minutes in Heaven. Smith opened 2020 with Still, Vol. 1 and returned the following year with Worship Forever, a concert continuation of his earlier Worship project. The holiday album Every Christmas appeared in 2023.

Michael Whitaker Smith entered the world in Kenova, West Virginia, as the child of an oil-refinery employee and a caterer. At the age of ten he embraced Christianity and spent his adolescent years within a circle of like-minded believers who regularly convened to make music. After graduation the circle disbanded, prompting Smith to experiment with alcohol, drugs, and reckless behavior. He managed only a few semesters of college before refining his songwriting abilities, which attracted the attention of a publishing company in 1978. Relocating to Nashville, he performed with several local ensembles, among them Rose. Still deeply involved with substances, he continued using until October 1979, when a personal crisis led to his renewed commitment to Christ. The following day he auditioned as keyboardist for the newly formed CCM ensemble Higher Ground, secured the position, and began to stabilize his life while touring with the group.

In 1981 Smith joined Meadowgreen Music as a staff songwriter and spent the ensuing years crafting gospel material for Sandi Patti, Kathy Troccoli, Bill Gaither, and Amy Grant. He joined Grant’s touring band as keyboardist in 1982; one year later he issued his debut solo recording, The Michael W. Smith Project, and served as her opening act. The album earned a Grammy nomination for Best Gospel Performance, and the follow-up, Michael W. Smith 2, elevated him to headliner status. He subsequently shifted toward more rock-oriented material aimed at younger listeners, allowing certain secular tracks to reach mainstream audiences.

Reunion Records permitted Geffen to handle distribution of his 1991 project, granting Smith fresh access to pop markets. A dual promotional strategy targeted both Christian and mainstream listeners, and the power ballad “Place in This World” from Go West Young Man bridged those worlds, climbing to the Top Ten on pop singles charts and earning platinum certification for the album. The move sparked debate among some devout followers concerned about commercial compromise, yet Smith maintained he simply sought to share his message with more people. As his discography expanded he collected Dove and Grammy honors, achieved further gold and platinum certifications, and was recognized by Keyboard magazine as one of rock’s premier players.

Entering the new century, Smith had already surpassed seven million records sold and secured twenty-five number-one Christian singles. Freedom, recorded in Ireland with the Irish Film Orchestra Limited and released in 2000, presented introspective compositions built around piano. The live albums Worship and Worship Again followed, and Healing Rain arrived in 2004 as his first collection of original studio material since the millennium began. Stand appeared in November 2006, succeeded by the seasonal release It’s a Wonderful Christmas in fall 2007.

His third live worship set, A New Hallelujah, captured at Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas, came out in 2008, while the studio album Wonder reached stores in 2010; both entered the Top 30 of the Billboard 200. Glory appeared the next year. Three projects surfaced in 2014—Hymns, Sovereign, and The Spirit of Christmas—with Sovereign achieving his strongest mainstream peak at number ten. In 2015 Smith took a supporting role in the film 90 Minutes in Heaven, adapted from Don Piper’s book, and he and his son Tyler Smith composed the score. Early 2016 brought the Cracker Barrel exclusive Hymns II: Shine on Us. Late in 2017 the single “Love Always Wins” previewed A Million Lights, which arrived on 16 February 2018 as his first pop-oriented album since Wonder and was followed a week later by the unexpected live praise-and-worship recording Surrounded. That same year he inaugurated a children’s book series accompanied by his first children’s album, Lullaby. February 2019 saw the live release Awaken: The Surrounded Experience, and Still, Vol. 1—an improvisational collection paired with scripture—emerged in 2020. Marking the twentieth anniversary of the September 11 attacks, Worship Forever appeared in 2021 as a concert sequel to the 2001 album Worship. The holiday EP Christmas at Home followed in 2022, featuring the Mark Campbell-produced track “Freeze the Frame” along with contributions from the Brentwood Baptist Choir, daughter Anna Bovi, and sixteen grandchildren. Smith expanded the EP into the full-length Every Christmas the next year.
