Francesca Battistelli fused soul, alternative rock, gospel, and mainstream pop ingredients across her Billboard-charting material, securing a Grammy Award after beginning to compose and interpret her original songs at fifteen. Early exposure to music, dance, and theater laid the groundwork for a life spent performing live. While still a teenager she issued her first collection, Just a Breath, in 2004. Her second album, My Paper Heart, arrived in 2008 and ascended to the summit of the Billboard Christian albums chart on the strength of the Christian number one single “Free to Be Me.” Mainstream recognition followed, and by 2014 her fifth project, If We’re Honest, climbed to a peak just shy of the Billboard 200 Top Ten; two of its tracks, “He Knows My Name” and the Grammy-winning “Holy Spirit,” earned gold certification. In 2020 she reappeared on the Billboard holiday albums chart with her second seasonal set, This Christmas. The following year brought the soundtrack contribution “God Is Good” for the film God’s Not Dead: We the People.

A native of New York, Battistelli attended a Broadway staging of The Secret Garden at age six and left determined to pursue a theatrical career. Her parents, both seasoned stage performers, enrolled her in acting classes and dance instruction. At fifteen she joined the Orlando-based teen pop ensemble Bella. After the group dissolved, she participated in a youth ministry and redirected her energies toward Christian pop. The future Dove Award recipient took up guitar, an instrument that facilitated her songwriting efforts.

An independent album titled Just a Breath appeared in 2004. Early 2008 saw the EP I’m Letting Go, her initial outing on the contemporary Christian imprint Fervent Records. Later that year the label released the full-length My Paper Heart, which entered the Billboard 200’s Top 40 and yielded the Christian chart-topper “Free to Be Me.” Its successor, “It’s Your Life,” crossed over to the Hot 100 at number 95. In 2010 she received a Dove Award as Female Vocalist of the Year.

Her subsequent album, Hundred More Years, released in 2011, improved on that showing by debuting at number 16 on the Billboard 200 and again leading the Christian albums chart; she also collected a second straight Dove Award for Female Vocalist of the Year. After issuing the 2012 holiday project Christmas, she achieved a career-best position of number 13 on the Billboard 200 with 2014’s If We’re Honest. Four of its songs reached the Christian Top Ten, among them “Write Your Story” and “Holy Spirit,” the latter earning her the 2016 Grammy for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song.

She resurfaced on the Christian charts in 2017 with Greatest Hits: The First Ten Years and followed with the 2018 single “The Breakup Song” from her sixth studio album, Own It. The set became her fifth consecutive release to land inside the Top Five of Billboard’s Top Christian Albums tally. In 2020 This Christmas reached number 12 on the holiday albums chart. “God Is Good,” a track tied to the God’s Not Dead franchise installment We the People, surfaced in 2021.
