Biography
David Crowder, the Texas-rooted CCM singer and songwriter, blends pop, rock, folk, electronic, bluegrass, and hip-hop into a broad stylistic mix. Early 2000s acclaim arrived when he fronted the praise & worship outfit David Crowder Band. Across the subsequent ten years the ensemble secured multiple Dove Awards for its inspirational rock approach while issuing well-liked projects such as Illuminate (2003), Remedy (2007), and Give Us Rest (2012). After adopting the streamlined Crowder identity in 2012, he pursued a solo trajectory that proved equally prosperous though more eclectic, beginning with the Top Ten-charting Neon Steeple in 2014. Although The Exile in 2024 became his fourth Christian albums chart-topper under the Crowder banner, his maiden Billboard Hot Christian Songs number one arrived with “Good God Almighty,” drawn from Milk & Honey, his fourth album issued in 2021.
Crowder first entered the music business upon noticing that more than half the students at Baylor University, the Christian institution he attended in Waco, Texas, skipped church services. He began actively enlisting fellow students for worship gatherings and composed original songs aimed at attracting younger listeners. Those songs eventually reached the public, resulting in the debut album Can You Hear Us? in 2002. Released under the David Crowder Band name, the record featured guitarists Jack Parker and Jason Solley, drummer Jeremy Bush, bassist Mike Dodson, and electric violinist Mike Hogan alongside Crowder. Their second effort, Illuminate, surfaced in fall 2003 and was followed a year later by The Lime CD, which gathered two prior live sets (The Green CD and The Yellow CD) previously distributed to fans who pre-ordered earlier albums or attended release events.
Sunsets & Sushi reached stores in early 2005, after which the bluegrass-inflected A Collision appeared in September of that year. A related offshoot titled B Collision arrived twelve months afterward and placed even greater emphasis on the ensemble’s bluegrass explorations. Remedy followed in 2007, then Church Music in 2009; the latter became the band’s third consecutive Christian number one and climbed to number 11 on the Billboard 200. Summer Happiness, a four-song EP of acoustic renditions from Church Music, surfaced in 2010. David Crowder Band’s sixth and final studio album, Give Us Rest; Or, A Requiem Mass in C (The Happiest of All Keys), arrived in 2012 and advanced to number two on the U.S. album chart.
Crowder’s solo debut Neon Steeple appeared in 2014 under the Crowder moniker and sustained his chart momentum by topping the Christian list, reaching number nine on the Billboard 200, and earning a Grammy nomination for “Come as You Are.” American Prodigal followed in September 2016, another Christian chart leader that peaked at number 12 on the Billboard 200. The non-album single “All My Hope,” recorded with Tauren Wells, became a hit in 2017. Branching further across genres, Crowder released I Know a Ghost in 2018, incorporating electronic, bluegrass, and hip-hop textures; the set reached number two on the Top Christian Albums chart and included contributions from Wells and Mandisa. Maverick City Music appeared on two tracks from Milk & Honey, Crowder’s fourth full-length and third Christian number one, issued in 2021 and featuring the Hot Christian Songs leaders “Good God Almighty” and “In the House.” Milk & Cookies: A Merry Crowder Christmas followed in 2022, while The Exile, his fifth studio album and fourth Crowder project to top the Christian albums chart, arrived in 2024 and contained the TobyMac-assisted CCM radio single “[DASH].”
