Biography
Christian singer and songwriter Ellie Holcomb emerged during the 2010s as one of contemporary Christian music’s most acclaimed and commercially viable voices, crafting material that pairs inward reflection with an earnest celebration of spiritual conviction. Her melodies draw from contemporary folk and Americana traditions yet expand into expansive sonic landscapes that align with her fervent vocal approach and unwavering thematic focus on belief. After contributing for years to Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors alongside her husband, she issued her debut solo album, As Sure as the Sun, in 2014—an ambitious yet grounded project rooted in folk-tinged worship—followed by the more expansive 2021 release Canyon, whose reflective tone mirrored the turbulent period of its creation. In 2024 she returned with All of My Days, a set of worship songs each drawn from passages in the Book of Psalms.
Born Elizabeth Asher Bannister on September 12, 1982, in Nashville, Tennessee, Holcomb is the daughter of Brown Bannister, a leading producer in the contemporary Christian field. Although music surrounded her upbringing, she initially pursued other paths, earning a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Tennessee in 2005 and later completing a master’s in teacher education. Around the completion of her studies she began a relationship with singer-songwriter Drew Holcomb; after their 2006 marriage she joined his band Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors, supplying vocals, guitar, and occasional songwriting. Her first appearance on record came with the group’s 2007 holiday album A Neighborly Christmas.
As her songwriting developed, Holcomb prepared material for performance apart from the band and launched her solo career in 2011 with the seven-track EP Magnolia, which reached number 16 on the Christian Albums chart. While still appearing with the Neighbors she recorded a second EP, With You Now, issued in 2013. That same year she and Drew welcomed their first child, prompting her departure from the group to prioritize family. She nevertheless released her first full-length solo album, As Sure as the Sun, in 2014; produced by her father, it peaked at number two on the Christian Albums chart and number 34 on the Billboard 200. Her follow-up, the 2017 album Red Sea Road, was likewise helmed by Brown Bannister and documented a family effort recorded while he battled cancer. In 2018 Holcomb published the children’s book Who Sang the First Song and issued the accompanying seven-song EP Sing: Creation Songs. She then signed with Capitol Christian Music Group and made her major-label debut with 2021’s Canyon, a collection centered on themes of hope and resilience amid disruption. The next year she and Drew collaborated on Coming Home: A Collection of Songs, which largely comprised new material alongside the earlier tracks “Feels Like Home” and “Hey Rivers,” both written for a Tennessee tourism initiative. In 2024 she delivered the seven-track EP All of My Days, a semi-acoustic, atmospheric project in which every song responds to a specific passage from the Book of Psalms.
