Biography
Contemporary Christian music duo Shane & Shane unites the individual efforts of performers Shane Barnard and Shane Everett. Their direct, testimonial style of CCM echoes the pioneering approach of early figures such as Steven Curtis Chapman and Michael W. Smith, while the pair’s signature close harmonies anchor a sound shaped primarily by Barnard’s acoustic soft-rock and country-leaning songcraft. The two first crossed paths as students at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. Barnard, who grew up in Lubbock and had organized student prayer groups since junior high, encountered Everett—a rock musician raised in the Dallas suburbs—shortly after Everett’s Christian conversion prompted him to join Barnard’s campus fellowship.
By then Barnard had already begun recording; in 1997 he and fellow Texas A&M student Caleb Carruth issued the independent album Salvation Still Remains. After that partnership ended amicably, Barnard continued as a solo artist with Everett contributing harmony vocals. Following separate releases issued under each man’s name, the pair formally adopted the moniker Shane & Shane. They reissued their debut Psalms under the new billing in 2002, then delivered Carry Away in 2003, Upstairs in 2004, and Clean in 2005. A live CD and DVD titled An Evening with Shane and Shane preceded an extended hiatus; the duo resurfaced in 2007 with Pages. Steady touring accompanied further prolific activity, yielding four additional albums over the next five years, among them the holiday recording Glory in the Highest.
Two strongly charting projects marked 2015 as a standout year. The Worship Initiative appeared in April, gathering well-known worship songs from the duo’s ongoing series of the same name, while six months later their tenth album, Psalms II—a sequel to their debut—entered Billboard’s Top 200. After the 2016 concert set Psalms Live, Shane & Shane returned in 2018 with Hymns, Vol. 1.
