Paul Baloche’s passion for music took root after an early encounter with the Beatles left a lasting impression. Raised in a French Catholic household, he picked up the guitar while still in junior high. Following graduation, he played clubs across southern New Jersey before expanding his performances into Philadelphia and Atlantic City venues. Around this period he met Rita, a country-and-western vocalist who later became his wife. Both experienced born-again conversions and relocated to California, where Baloche enrolled at the Grove School of Music and encountered Christian artists including Kelly Willard. Inspired by Willard’s example, he moved to Garden Valley, Texas, to join Last Days Ministries, regularly praying with fellow musicians before leading them in spontaneous songs of praise. After four years there, he and Rita returned to California, and he accepted the role of music pastor at Community Christian Fellowship. While serving the congregation he issued a series of modestly produced live recordings, among them First Love. His first album for a label, He Is Faithful, appeared on Hosanna! Music in 1992. Baloche has since led worship across Europe, Singapore, New Zealand, South Africa, and numerous additional countries, while also accepting speaking invitations alongside his musical work. In a 1998 conversation with The Tyler Morning Telegraph he characterized his songwriting as “journaling his process of his walk with the Lord.” He continues to make his home in Lindale, Texas, and has led worship at Community Christian Fellowship since the early 1990s.
