Biography
One of his era’s most celebrated and commercially dominant figures in contemporary Christian music, Steven Curtis Chapman first gained traction toward the close of the 1980s by blending country and folk textures with soft-rock balladry and lushly arranged pop. Early successes such as the GMA Dove Award-winning single “His Eyes,” taken from 1988’s Real Life Conversations, and the title song of 1989’s More to This Life soon broadened his reach beyond core listeners, allowing him to maintain loyalty within his Christian audience while crafting singles that thrived at radio. A repeat Grammy recipient—for 1990’s For the Sake of the Call and again for 2004’s All Things New—he has continued to rank among the format’s most consistent sellers, amassing dozens of Top Ten Billboard Christian Albums entries that include 2009’s Beauty Will Rise and 2013’s The Glorious Unfolding. He also stands as one of the leading contenders for career GMA Dove Awards. Alongside these mainstream-leaning projects, Chapman has periodically returned to his earliest influences, releasing the acoustic-country set Deep Roots in 2013 and the worship-oriented Worship and Believe in 2016; in 2019 he topped the bluegrass charts with the follow-up Deeper Roots: Where the Bluegrass Grows, then issued Still in 2022.
Born in 1962 and raised in Paducah, Kentucky, Chapman spent countless hours inside his father’s music store, where he mastered guitar and piano among other instruments. Initially enrolled as a pre-med student at Anderson College in Indiana, he ultimately abandoned that path, left school, and relocated to Nashville to pursue songwriting and performance. While employed at an Opryland USA stage show, he honed the craft his father had taught him; one of his compositions was soon cut by the prominent gospel act the Imperials, launching a catalog that would later be recorded by such gospel and country luminaries as Sandi Patti, Billy Dean, Glen Campbell, and Roger Whittaker.
Although multiple labels and publishers expressed interest by 1987, Chapman chose to sign with Sparrow, the leading Christian-music imprint. His debut album, First Hand, appeared that year; its opening single, “Weak Days,” climbed to number two on the contemporary Christian chart. The follow-up, 1988’s Real Life Conversations, generated four additional hits, among them the chart-topping “His Eyes,” which Chapman co-wrote with James Isaac Elliott and which earned the Gospel Music Association’s Contemporary Recorded Song of the Year honor in 1989. That same year he was named Best Songwriter of the Year at the GMA Awards. His third release, More to This Life, delivered four number-one singles and earned an unprecedented ten GMA Award nominations in 1990, of which he claimed five. For the Sake of the Call strengthened his dominance still further, yielding five more chart-toppers, another round of GMA trophies, and Chapman’s first Grammy, awarded in the Best Pop Gospel Album category.
In 1992 he aimed for broader pop appeal with The Great Adventure, whose title track and accompanying video also secured a Grammy; after EMI/Liberty acquired Sparrow, the album received wider distribution through discount retailers and was certified gold in 1993. Also issued in 1993, the concert package The Live Adventure captured additional GMA honors and brought Chapman Songwriter and Artist of the Year recognition from American Songwriter magazine. Heaven in the Real World arrived in 1994 and was supported by an extensive tour, while Signs of Life followed in 1996 and Speechless in 1999.
Although Chapman’s catalog had long performed strongly on Billboard’s CCM charts, 2001’s Declaration crossed over to reach the Billboard 200; both that album and 2002’s All About Love cracked the Top 15, and All Things New peaked at number 22 in 2004. September 2005 brought the holiday collection All I Really Want for Christmas, succeeded the next year by Musical Blessing. Beauty Will Rise, written in memory of his daughter Maria, appeared in 2009.
After issuing Re:Creation in 2011, Chapman departed Sparrow and joined Reunion Records, which released his third Christmas project, Joy, in 2012. The Glorious Unfolding, his first collection of original material in four years, surfaced in 2013 alongside the acoustic- and bluegrass-oriented Deep Roots; another seasonal outing, Christmas Hymns, followed in 2014.
Nearly three decades into his recording career, Chapman moved to PLG (Provident Label Group) and delivered his debut worship album, Worship and Believe, in 2016. A companion to Deep Roots, Deeper Roots: Where the Bluegrass Grows, reached number one on Billboard’s bluegrass chart in 2019. His third PLG release, Still, arrived in October 2022, with Chapman sharing writing and production duties alongside Bryan Fowler and Micah Kuiper.
