Originally a high school educator based in Rosemont, Minnesota, Sara Groves arrived on the gospel landscape near the beginning of the 2000s, bringing distinctive vocals and spiritually focused songwriting. Although comparisons to Shawn Colvin and Rich Mullins surfaced, Groves forged an independent artistic profile that resists narrow classification, fusing contemporary Christian elements with understated pop textures. Epic Records released her debut Conversations at the start of 2001, after which she continued with All Right Here in 2002, Other Side of Something in 2004, Add to the Beauty in 2005, Tell Me What You Know in 2007, O Holy Night in 2008, and Fireflies and Songs in 2009, the last of these named “album of the year” by Christianity Today. Steve Hindalong, whose credits include Leeland, City on a Hill, and Sixpence None the Richer, produced her tenth studio album Invisible Empires, issued in October 2011. Two years afterward she issued the double-disc retrospective The Collection, drawn from her first ten albums and supplemented by several new recordings. Following an interval of nearly four years without fresh original material, Floodplain appeared in late 2015 and Abide with Me arrived in 2017, both reaching the Top 10 on the Billboard Christian charts. Her fourteenth album, the Christmas-themed Joy of Every Longing Heart, surfaced in late 2019.
