Biography
Mississippi native Ginny Owens has built a reputation as a Dove Award-winning singer and songwriter whose pop music reflects a sincere, faith-centered perspective. In addition to recording and performing, she serves as an adjunct professor of songwriting at Belmont University and leads worship at the People's Church in Franklin, Tennessee; she also established the Fingerprint Initiative, a nonprofit, in 2005.
Owens entered the world in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1975 and lost her sight completely by age three because of a degenerative eye condition present at birth. Drawn to music early on, she focused on the piano and earned a music-education degree from Belmont University, yet concerns from schools about employing a sight-impaired instructor prompted her to launch a performing career instead. She first placed material with a publishing company, then cut a demo that secured a deal with Rocketown Records, the CCM imprint founded by Michael W. Smith.
Her debut album, Without Condition, arrived in 1999 and climbed to number 25 on the Top Contemporary Christian chart while introducing her signature song, “If You Want Me To.” The Gospel Music Association named her New Artist of the Year in 2000, the first of three Dove Awards she would receive. Rocketown issued several additional projects: Something More in 2002, Beautiful in 2004, Long Way Home in 2005, and the seasonal set Bring Us Peace in 2006.
Owens launched her own imprint, Chick Power, in 2009 and debuted on it with Say Amen...Hymns and Songs of Faith, a set blending newly arranged and traditional hymns. Two years later she issued the more R&B-oriented Get In, I'm Driving. During this period she returned to Jackson to support her mother through breast-cancer treatment; once her mother’s condition improved, Owens moved back to Nashville and released the 2014 album I Know a Secret, which included the single “I Will Praise You.”
Love Be the Loudest, her ninth studio album, appeared in 2016 and mixed pop, folk, and electronic elements. Production came from Rusty Varenkamp, Josh Bronleewe, and Chad Copelin, while guest contributions were supplied by Ellie Holcomb, Meredith Andrews, All Sons & Daughters, and additional artists. After placing “Fly Away” on the 2017 soundtrack for Trafficked, she issued the singles “Remind Me” and “Stand with Me” in 2018.
