Christian rock outfit Unspoken arrived on the Billboard 200 in 2014 via their self-titled debut, which showcased an uplifting and melodic style. Their soulful approach gained additional depth on the 2016 follow-up Follow Through through the inclusion of horn sections and electronic textures.
The group’s founding duo—vocalist Chad Mattson and guitarist Mike Gomez—first connected during a missionary journey to the Dominican Republic. Once stateside, the pair recruited Mattson’s longtime friend Jon Lowry, whose multi-instrumental skills proved essential. Drummer Ariel Munoz completed the early roster after the four musicians encountered one another at a Nashville talent competition. Centricity Records signed the band, which issued its first single, “Who You Are,” in 2012; the track climbed to number eleven on Billboard’s Hot Christian Songs survey. Their 2013 successor, “Lift My Life Up,” duplicated that chart placement. Following several shorter releases, Unspoken delivered the full-length debut in 2014, which rose to number nine on the Top Christian Albums tally and yielded the late-year Christian Top Five single “Start a Fire.”
While readying their sophomore album, the quartet issued the all-acoustic EP Unplugged in 2015, presenting earlier material in stripped-down arrangements. Follow Through appeared the next year and reached number seven on the Christian albums chart. Its single “The Cure” became a Top 20 Christian hit in 2017 and also entered the Top 40 of the Hot Rock Songs listing. Munoz departed in 2018, after which the lineup of Mattson, Lowry, Munoz, guitarist Wiso Aponte, and keyboardist Alan Pelno scored a number-six Christian songs hit with 2019’s “Reason,” the title track from the band’s third album. With Tedd T. (Newsboys, for KING & COUNTRY) and Christopher Stevens (TobyMac) among the producers, Reason settled at number 22 on the corresponding album chart.
