Mac Powell rose to prominence chiefly as the lead singer and a founding member of the Grammy- and Dove Award-winning Christian rock band Third Day, while also building a parallel career as a solo singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer. After Third Day concluded its three-decade run in 2018 following sales of more than ten million albums, Powell opened a new phase by issuing 2019's Back Again, the first album credited to his country, gospel, and rock outfit Mac Powell and the Family Reunion. In 2021 he unveiled "River of Life," the lead single from his forthcoming debut on Capitol Christian Music Group.

Originally from Alabama, Powell settled in Atlanta during his sophomore year of high school and formed Third Day with guitarist Mark Lee, the pair serving as the ensemble's only continuous members. Their signature mix of Southern rock and contemporary worship quickly connected with listeners, yielding millions of records sold, twenty-eight number-one Christian album chart radio hits, four Grammy Awards, one American Music Award, and twenty-four Dove Awards by the time of the 2018 split. In the band's later years Powell pursued a more secular direction, releasing an eponymous solo debut in 2020 and the country-leaning Southpaw two years later. The 2019 project Back Again appeared under the Mac Powell and the Family Reunion name and drew on players from his prior solo sessions and touring groups. The single "River of Life" surfaced in 2021 and was included on his Capitol Christian Music Group solo debut issued later that year.
