Pioneering the integration of hip-hop influences into gospel music while rarely venturing beyond conventional pop/rock frameworks, dc Talk rose to prominence as one of Christian contemporary music’s leading acts in the mid-’90s. Their fourth release, Jesus Freak, achieved the highest chart debut ever recorded by a gospel act on Billboard’s album listings. The trio originated in Washington, D.C., in the late ’80s with Toby McKeehan and Michael Tait as its initial members. Kevin Max Smith joined shortly afterward, prompting the addition of hip-hop elements to the self-titled debut issued in 1988 by ForeFront Records. Because McKeehan, Tait, and Smith preferred not to perform instrumental parts in the studio, they delivered exclusively vocal tracks on the 1991 follow-up Nu Thang. Just a year later they issued Free at Last, after which the group devoted several years primarily to live touring that included a visual reinvention aligning them with the grunge aesthetic of the era. The 1995 album Jesus Freak accordingly emphasized more aggressive guitar work, all contained within harmonically driven pop/rock arrangements. At the moment of its arrival, Jesus Freak surpassed every prior gospel album in sales volume and ultimately surpassed the one-million mark. Supernatural appeared in 1998.
