Biography
David Pelsue on vocals, Nathan Ehman on guitar, and Eric Carter on drums had already collaborated in multiple projects dating back to their Noblesville, IN high-school years when they launched Kids in the Way in 1997. An earlier band name gave way to the current one once guitarist Austin Cobb and bassist Nathan Hughes came aboard, marking the official start of the five-piece Christian rock outfit. Drawing from rock and screamo sources such as the Smashing Pumpkins and Underoath, the group issued a self-titled EP that quickly broadened their reach and secured higher-profile gigs. A support slot alongside Audio Adrenaline directly resulted in a contract with Flicker Records, the imprint established by members of the headlining act. Their first full-length, Safe from the Losing Fight, arrived in March 2004, while road work with Skillet, Pillar, and Relient K steadily expanded their audience. That November, Hughes departed and Rian Flynn took over on bass. The follow-up Apparitions of Melody surfaced in May 2005; a revised edition titled Apparitions of Melody: The Dead Letters Edition appeared in mid-2006, adding a DVD and bonus tracks. Further personnel shifts by that same year reduced the band to a quartet after Cobb exited and Wille Bostic joined as the new bassist.
