Showbread, a post-hardcore group with Christian leanings, gained recognition equally for their coordinated attire in red and black as for their erratic "raw rock" sound, which they coined themselves, along with their dynamic performances onstage. Originating from Savannah, Georgia, this seven-member ensemble featured singers Ivory Mobley and Josh Dies, along with lead guitarist Matt Davis, bassist Patrick Porter, guitarist Mike Jensen, drummer Marvin Reilly, and keytarist John Giddens. In 2001, they put out two independent EPs titled Human Beings Are Too Shallow to Fall in Love and Goodnight Sweetheart, the Stitches Are Coming Apart. By the middle of 2004, the band had inked a deal with Solid State/Tooth and Nail. Teaming up with Sylvia Massy Shivy, whose past work includes Tool and Johnny Cash, they issued their first release on the label, No Sir, Nihilism Is Not Practical, in October of that year. The group then embarked on numerous tours alongside Versus the Mirror, Sullivan, and Dead Poetic. In August 2006, now clad in black and green, they delivered Age of Reptiles, on which Marvin Reilly received drum credits despite having departed the lineup prior to its launch. Additional performances supporting Paulson, the Finalist, and Roses Are Red followed.
