Sherwood stands apart from most acts that have appeared on the Vans Warped Tour by citing the Beatles and the Beach Boys among their chief inspirations. The indie quintet, based in San Luis Obispo, California, shares stages and stylistic ground with Yellowcard and other post-Green Day pop-punk outfits yet maintains an overt power-pop sensibility that sharpens their melodic identity.

The group took its name from an early in-joke about creating a concept record that would sync with the 1973 Disney film Robin Hood in the manner that Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon is said to align with The Wizard of Oz. Sherwood came together in late 2002 while its founding members were enrolled at Cal Poly State University. Singer-guitarist Dan Koch, bassist Nate Henry, and guitarist Chris Armstrong formed the core, later completed by drummer Joe Greenetz and keyboardist Mike Leibovich.

Their first release, the self-issued The Summer EP in 2004, plus a supporting slot on that summer’s Vans Warped Tour, drew interest from SideCho Records, which signed the band before year’s end. Sherwood’s debut full-length, Sing, But Keep Going, arrived in May 2005. Extensive touring followed, including dates with This Providence, Tokyo Rose, and Daphne Loves Derby. Armstrong departed in early 2006 to resume his studies, just as the quartet’s visibility increased through coverage on AbsolutePunk.net. Later that year they signed with MySpace Records and issued A Different Light in March 2007.

The 2009 album QU, produced by Brad Wood, earned both critical praise and commercial attention. Success notwithstanding, the members parted ways in 2010 to concentrate on family life. Sherwood reunited in 2015 and quickly raised $20,000 through an Indiegogo campaign to fund their return release, Some Things Never Leave You, which appeared in June 2016.
