Biography
Originating in Massachusetts, the Hotelier first assembled while its members attended high school in Dudley. Christian Holden, the lead vocalist, connected with Chris Hoffman, Zack Shaw, and Sam Frederick in 2009; the group initially recorded under the name the Hotel Year before switching to the Hotelier to simplify online discovery and reduce mix-ups with area lodging. Their debut EP, We Are All Alone, appeared the same year and circulated mainly within the state, yet it cleared the path for the 2011 full-length It Never Goes Out.
Composed between the ages of 16 and 18 while the band still operated as The Hotel Year, that album drew limited notice and stayed largely obscure until later work raised their profile. With Home, Like Noplace Is There in 2014 the Hotelier cultivated a pronounced emo-revival approach, prompting one writer to single out the Hotelier and Foxing as the pair steering the revival.
In 2015 the band played Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona and supported La Dispute and Title Fight on the latter’s co-headlining tour. Early the following year a video trailer built around the single “Goodness, Pt. 1” announced a forthcoming LP; after “Soft Animal” followed as the second preview, the Hotelier issued their third album, Goodness, in May.
