Hailing from Minnesota, Remo Drive first attracted attention by blending indie rock with D.I.Y. emo-punk. Drawing from influences that included Weezer, Vampire Weekend, the Police, and Title Fight, the group was initially linked to the 2010s emo revival and issued its debut album, Greatest Hits, in 2017. The subsequent pair of LPs—Natural, Everyday Degradation in 2019 and A Portrait of an Ugly Man in 2020—saw the band smooth some of its rougher edges while expanding its sonic range. That progression continued on the wide-ranging Mercy, released in 2024 and helmed by producer Phil Ek.

The Bloomington-based outfit originated in late 2013 when brothers Erik (vocals/guitar) and Stephen Paulson (bass) came together; drummer Sam Mathys and touring guitarist Zack Cummings were added soon afterward. Early output consisted of Demos 2014, followed by the EPs Stay Out Longer (2014) and Wait for the Sun (2015). The official debut LP, Greatest Hits (Epitaph), appeared in 2017; recorded at home and self-released, the set drew inspiration from Jeff Rosenstock and PUP and featured the single “Yer Killin’ Me.” Mathys departed in 2018, leaving Remo Drive as an official sibling duo, and the band also put out the EP Pop Music that year.

Natural, Everyday Degradation arrived in 2019 as the group’s sophomore album; the lo-fi fuzz of the debut gave way to a cleaner indie rock approach on songs such as “Shakin’” and “Separate Beds.” A Portrait of an Ugly Man, the third full-length, followed in 2020 and contained the fist-pumping anthem “Star Worship.” In the ensuing years Erik relocated to Albany, New York, while Stephen stayed in Minnesota, creating an extended interval between recordings that prompted a creative shift. Phil Ek (the Shins, Fleet Foxes) was brought in to produce the fourth album, Mercy, whose 2024 release showcased the band’s broadest stylistic range to date along with more introspective writing and varied layers of sound and texture.
