Hailing from Long Island, the indie rock group Macseal fuses catchy emo melodies with the intricate structures of math rock in its spirited approach. The five-piece outfit issued three successively better-received independent EPs across the mid-2010s before unveiling its first full-length album in 2019.

Ryan Bartlett on vocals and guitar, Cole Szilagyi on vocals and guitar, Greg Feltman on guitar, Justin Canavaciol on bass, and Francesca Impastato on drums comprise the lineup that came together in 2014. That August the members self-released their self-titled, home-recorded debut EP. Complex riffs and off-kilter time signatures defined the band’s early sound, yet the songwriting stayed approachable thanks to its warmly melodic and emo-rooted character. A follow-up EP titled Yeah, No, I Know surfaced in 2017 while the group intensified its live schedule around academic obligations, with several members attending Berklee School of Music at the time.

Veteran engineer J. Robbins, known for his work with the Promise Ring and the Dismemberment Plan, helmed the 2018 EP Map It Out in Maryland, yielding noticeably stronger production values. Ahead of its first album Macseal inked a deal with 6131 Records and transitioned to a four-piece after Feltman stepped away. The resulting full-length, Super Enthusiast, arrived in late 2019.
