Biography
Philadelphia's Mannequin Pussy emerged as a punk rock outfit whose sound channels visceral emotion without confining itself to fury alone. The group aligned first with the Tiny Engines imprint, issuing two widely praised full-lengths during the mid-2010s, then shifted to Epitaph for the 2019 release Patience and the 2024 album I Got Heaven.
Childhood friends Marisa Dabice, who handles vocals and guitar, and Thanasi Paul, on guitar, launched the project in 2010. The pair initially recorded as a duo in New York before relocating to Philadelphia, where drummer Drew Adler joined to form a trio. Their first album, Gypsy Pervert—also referred to as GP—appeared in 2013. Positive coverage within indie punk circles prompted Tiny Engines to reissue the record the following year. After extensive touring, the lineup shifted once more: Adler departed, Kaleen Reading took over on drums, and bassist Colins Regisford, known as Bear, came aboard. This quartet delivered the sophomore effort Romantic, which Tiny Engines put out in October 2016. Clocking in under twenty minutes yet packed with intensity, the album earned strong critical notices and supported a full national tour throughout 2017.
The band next entered the studio with producer Will Yip, whose prior credits include Quicksand and the Menzingers, to shape their third album. Epitaph issued the resulting Patience in 2019, an effort that leaned more heavily into melody. Paul exited in 2021 to focus on other pursuits. Operating as a trio that year, the group released the EP Perfect, highlighted by the single “Control.” The collection also contained “Pigs Pigs Pigs,” marking the first track to showcase lead vocals from bassist Regisford. During subsequent touring, guitarists Maxine Steen and Carolyn Haynes joined the lineup, with Steen ultimately becoming a permanent member.
In August 2023 Mannequin Pussy regained ownership of the masters for their initial two albums from Tiny Engines. Shortly afterward they established their own Romantic Records imprint and celebrated by reissuing Romantic. Their fourth studio album and second for Epitaph, the John Congleton-produced I Got Heaven, arrived in March 2024.
