Biography
Potty Mouth surfaced from Massachusetts in 2012 with the Sun Damage EP, channeling the brooding textures of 1990s indie rock, SST releases, and traces of riot grrrl attitude. After issuing one album and a follow-up EP, the group issued their second full-length, Snafu, in 2019, tightening the arrangements while holding fast to punk origins.
Having performed in several prior groups, Ally Einbinder decided to assemble an all-female punk outfit after encountering constraints and unease in mixed lineups. She connected with guitarist and vocalist Abby Weems, drummer Victoria Mandanas, and guitarist Phoebe Harris, establishing Potty Mouth as bassist in mid-2011. The name derived from an album title by foundational riot grrrl act Bratmobile, yet the members stated in interviews that they held no explicit political aims. Still teenagers at the outset, the musicians performed regularly and tracked material often, releasing the Sun Damage EP on 12" vinyl in 2012 en route to their 2013 debut album, Hell Bent.
After Harris exited, the remaining trio returned in 2015 with a self-titled EP. Their next album, Snafu, appeared on Get Better Records in 2019 and featured polished production from Courtney Ballard, whose credits include Waterparks and Emarosa, plus songwriting input from the Go-Go's Gina Schock, Death Cab for Cutie's Chris Walla, and additional collaborators.
