Biography
Sophie Allison performs under the name Soccer Mommy, shaping a singular conversational and confessional approach drawn from 1990s indie rock. Early bedroom recordings she issued herself led to a deal with Fat Possum, which issued her debut album Clean to widespread praise in 2018. The 2020 follow-up Color Theory, issued by Loma Vista/Concord, retained the core guitar-driven indie-rock sound while adding subtle synth elements. Allison pursued those atmospheric qualities further on Sometimes, Forever, the 2022 album produced with Daniel Lopatin of Oneohtrix Point Never. For 2024’s Evergreen she instead partnered with Ben H. Allen III (Deerhunter, Belle and Sebastian) at Maze Studios in Atlanta, favoring a more organic palette that included acoustic guitars, strings, and flutes while keeping the focus on songwriting.
Born May 27, 1997, in Zurich, Switzerland, Allison moved with her family to Nashville, Tennessee, at age two. She took up guitar during her time at the Nashville School of the Arts and, after graduating, began posting original material online under the Soccer Mommy name, starting with the Songs for the Recently Sad EP. While enrolled at New York University she continued self-releasing, issuing Songs from My Bedroom late in 2015 and its sequel early the next year. Orchid Tapes put out the mini-LP For Young Hearts in 2016; it reached number five on Billboard’s Heatseekers Albums chart and helped secure her Fat Possum contract. Several early tracks were reworked for Collection, which appeared in August 2017 and was followed by support tours with the Drums and Jay Som.
Gabe Wax, whose credits include the War on Drugs and Fleet Foxes, produced Clean, Soccer Mommy’s first full studio album, released in March 2018. The record earned strong reviews and landed on multiple year-end lists; Allison promoted it with dates alongside Stephen Malkmus, Paramore, and Vampire Weekend. She stayed with Wax for Color Theory, drawing on the sound of old cassette tapes to broaden her sonic range. The album peaked at number 142 on the Billboard 200 and number seven on the Alternative chart. For her third album she switched to Daniel Lopatin, resulting in the more experimental Sometimes, Forever, which surfaced in June 2022, reached number 137 on the Billboard 200, topped the Heatseekers chart, and occasionally evoked dream-pop and shoegaze. After the collaborative single “Lose You” with Bully, Allison issued the five-song covers EP Karaoke Night in 2023, featuring her versions of tracks by R.E.M., Sheryl Crow, and Pavement. Evergreen, her fourth album, arrived on Loma Vista in October 2024 and emphasized organic textures over the atmospheric layers of the previous release while remaining more detailed than her debut.
