Biography
Julia Jacklin fuses dreamy indie pop, tense indie rock, and confessional alt-country into a fluid whole that recalls Angel Olsen, Sharon Van Etten, and Caitlin Rose. Her debut LP, Don't Let the Kids Win, arrived in 2016 and reached Australia's Top 50. Three years later the follow-up, Crushing, climbed to number eight on the same chart with its focus on romantic dissolution. Written primarily on a Roland keyboard rather than guitar, her third album, PRE PLEASURE, appeared in 2022 and incorporated wider instrumental palettes, including contributions from a full orchestra.
Jacklin was born in Sydney and grew up in a household of educators in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales. After first encountering Britney Spears at age ten and later Avril Lavigne and Evanescence while in high school, she abandoned plans for social work in favor of music. Shifting influences prompted deeper songwriting, drawing on Fiona Apple, Anna Calvi, and Appalachian folk trio Mountain Man. She spent weekdays at a factory manufacturing essential oils and nights sharpening her craft through live shows and studio sessions. Early singles “Pool Party” and “Coming of Age” attracted attention in Australia and the U.K., leading to the 2016 release of Don't Let the Kids Win on Transgressive in the U.K. and Europe, Polyvinyl in the U.S., and Liberation Music in Australia and New Zealand. The album peaked at number 42 domestically and was supported by an extensive 2017 European tour.
In mid-2018 Polyvinyl issued a self-titled album by Jacklin’s brighter indie-rock outfit Phantastic Ferniture, and that September she opened U.S. dates for First Aid Kit. Around the same time she tracked her second solo record with producer Burke Reid (Courtney Barnett, Liam Finn), who was instructed to retain natural details such as breathing and instrument creaks. Crushing surfaced on the same labels in early 2019, rising to number eight in Australia and marking her first appearances on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart (number 12) and Independent Albums chart (number 32) amid a worldwide tour.
Jacklin recorded the next album with producer Marcus Paquin (the Weather Station, Richard Reed Parry) and a band featuring members of the Weather Station, while selected tracks included orchestral parts arranged by Owen Pallett. PRE PLEASURE was issued in August 2022 via Polyvinyl, Transgressive, and Liberation.
