Margaret Glaspy, a singer and songwriter based in Brooklyn, stepped forward in 2016 with her first album, Emotions and Math, which fused introspective lyrics and a direct rock drive into an intensely personal yet forceful statement. She spent the following years on the road, sharpening her approach across an intermediate EP before unveiling Devotion in 2020, an album that embraced richer textures. Her third full-length, Echo the Diamond, appeared in 2023 and reclaimed the electric-guitar focus of her debut while favoring an unscripted creative process.

Originally from California, Glaspy moved to Boston after finishing high school and enrolled at the Berklee College of Music. When her scholarship funds ended, she continued sitting in on master classes with a student ID, wrote new material, and supported herself through temporary work. Relocating to Brooklyn opened fresh stages for live performance and led to the 2012 release of her first EP, Homeschool. A second EP, If & When, followed in 2013. Drawing from sources that range from Joni Mitchell’s Blue to Weezer’s Pinkerton, Glaspy distinguished herself within New York’s D.I.Y. indie circles through her commanding voice and frequently blues-inflected electric guitar playing. After tracking early versions of her debut album at home, she attracted the attention of ATO Records; once signed, she re-recorded the songs in a professional studio, where Shawn Everett (Alabama Shakes, Lucius) handled the mixing.

Emotions and Math reached listeners in June 2016 and prompted widespread touring. In early 2018 ATO issued the three-song EP Born Yesterday. Devotion, her 2020 sophomore album, marked a clear departure, trading the sparse, guitar-led arrangements of her first record for a broader sonic range across a set of love songs. Echo the Diamond, co-produced with her partner, guitarist Julian Lage, took yet another path: Glaspy captured the material with unfiltered immediacy. The resulting guitar-driven collection, both spontaneous and lean, builds on the sharp, rugged character of her debut while moving through feelings that span infatuation, humor, and deep sorrow.
