Biography
The project known as Men I Trust originated from the creative efforts of Dragos Chiriac and Jessy Caron, who were music students at Laval University at the time. Their sound blends dreamy atmospheres with wistful extended chords and funky, low-key dance grooves. The Montreal, Canada D.I.Y. endeavor launched its first full-length release, Men I Trust, during 2014. Although the initial pair of albums by the duo incorporated multiple guest vocalists, Emmanuelle Proulx joined as an official member beginning in 2015. Their third studio album, Oncle Jazz from 2019, earned a long-list nomination for the 2020 Polaris Music Prize. In 2021, Untourable Album appeared, later supported by a tour.
Dragos Chiriac, handling keyboards, and Jessy Caron, on bass and guitar, first crossed paths in high school during the mid-2000s. Their reunion occurred in 2012 at Laval University, prompting a decision to work together. At that point, Chiriac pursued a master's degree focused on audio post-production, while Caron completed a bachelor's in jazz guitar. An Italo disco track emerged from their initial collaboration, leading them to appreciate the outcome and establish a project centered on guest singers. Productions over the subsequent years contributed to Chiriac's master's and subsequent Ph.D., granting access to equipment for recording, mixing, and mastering.
The pair encountered Odile Marmet-Rochefort in 2013 during her classical voice studies. She contributed to the studio by recording "Introit," where she improvised the melody immediately. This track featured on the self-titled debut album by Men I Trust, issued in May 2014. Multiple vocalists appeared on that release, credited solely by first names, among them Marmet-Rochefort. Local attention followed, including chart placement and radio airplay. Mid-2015 brought Headroom, which included some returning vocalists like Marmet-Rochefort alongside new addition Emmanuelle Proulx. Both had started touring with the group and achieved member status. Headroom helped secure positions on prominent streaming playlists and social media charts.
A series of singles emerged over the following years, with "Humming Man" and "Lauren" arriving in early 2016. Festival appearances that year encompassed the Montreal International Jazz Festival, M for Montreal, POP Montreal, plus events in Toronto, Shanghai, and Beijing. Tracks such as "Tailwhip" from 2017 and "Show Me How" from 2018 accumulated millions of streams. Following a 2018 North American tour that included Coachella, the third album Oncle Jazz arrived in September 2019 and reached the long list for the subsequent Polaris Music Prize.
Shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic began, the live album Forever Live Sessions came out in mid-2020. Their fourth studio album, Untourable Album, was released in August 2021, enabling a North American tour to start in September.
