Biography
Centered on a relaxed fusion of classic bossa nova, lo-fi textures, and jazzy arrangements echoing the Beach Boys, the Texas indie pop outfit Summer Salt cultivated listeners through successive EPs that grew steadily more acclaimed before issuing their first full-length album, Happy Camper, in 2018. Although only a fraction of their output appeared via independent labels, the group generated millions of streams and cultivated substantial attention by handling releases independently, a pattern that persisted into the following decade through additional self-issued EPs alongside label-supported albums such as Sequoia Moon in 2021 and Campanita in 2023.
Core members Matthew Terry on vocals and guitar together with Eugene Chung on drums first assembled the project as a duo during high school, performing at modest venues throughout the Denton and Dallas region in their late teens. Relocating to Austin’s expanding indie community in 2012 allowed Summer Salt to refine their signature blend of sunny melodic pop and harmonically focused songwriting rooted in the 1960s. Their introductory EP, Driving to Hawaii, arrived in 2015 and brought wider notice along with tracks such as “Sweet to Me” and the title song. Further EPs followed regularly, among them 2017’s So Polite, which featured the widely streamed “Candy Wrappers.” Enlisting Seattle producer Phil Ek, known for work with Fleet Foxes and Band of Horses, the band broadened its palette with added Latin and African elements on the 2018 album Happy Camper and backed the release with an extensive U.S. tour. The EP Honeyweed surfaced in July 2019.
Following the independently issued 2020 EP Avenue G, Summer Salt once again collaborated with Ek on their sophomore full-length, Sequoia Moon, which Cherry Lime Records released in 2021. The Juniper Songbook appeared in 2022, presenting reinterpreted versions of earlier material, while the standalone single “April Baby” emerged the same year. Teaming with Wax Bodega, the group delivered Campanita in 2023, a more introspective set whose twelve richly arranged tracks explored themes of love, family, and joy.
