Australian duo Good Morning sustains the essence of 1990s lo-fi experimental bedroom pop through the sonic imprints of Smog and Sebadoh while incorporating the buoyant indie pop textures associated with Flying Nun. Early singles moved from scrappy noise pop toward refined balladry, yet the approach on 2018’s Prize // Reward settled into a homespun, loosely assembled aesthetic. The pair of 2019 releases displayed the group’s polished indie rock credentials on The Option and its introspective, stoner-inflected character on Basketball Breakdowns. Following a Polyvinyl signing, the band delivered the Barnyard LP in October 2021. Departing from earlier lo-fi methods, they unveiled the expansive, melody-driven double album Good Morning Seven in 2024.

Melbourne natives Stefan Blair and Liam Parsons began composing and tracking material together during high school. Their 2014 cassette debut Shawcross attracted notice, after which the 2015 singles “A Vessel”/“Radiovoice” and “On the Street”/“You” rapidly sold out. Glory, their second concise album and a strictly lo-fi statement, arrived in January 2016; the duo assembled a live ensemble that toured Australia throughout the remainder of the year and issued the “Step Aside”/“Oppsie” single before year’s end. Brisbane imprint Bedroom Suck subsequently signed the act and compiled the early material as Glory/Shawcross in July 2017. Blair and Parsons had already commenced work on a follow-up, capturing it across several residences over multiple years. The resulting mid-fi recordings revealed incremental sonic development and included saxophone contributions from Glenn Blair on numerous tracks. Mikey Young mastered Prize // Reward, which Bedroom Suck and Remote Control Records issued in May 2018. Shortly thereafter, A$AP Rocky interpolated the 2014 track “Don’t Come Home Today” into his psychedelic trap cut “Kids Turned Out Fine.”

Good Morning self-released two brief albums in 2019. The Option surfaced in April with live-band bassist John Considine and drummer James MacLeod appearing on record for the first time. Basketball Breakdowns followed in October, its songs captured during a four-day session while the group toured Japan. The April 2021 double-A-side single “Mollyduker” b/w “Keep It” inaugurated both a new home studio and a deal with American indie Polyvinyl; the full-length Barnyard LP emerged six months later. Although the pair historically tracked albums in mere days, the subsequent project diverged from that pattern. Crafted and laid down in their home studio across eighteen months, the double album emphasized layered cohesion and a pronounced melodic pop orientation. Good Morning Seven appeared in March 2024, marked by intricate arrangements, dense vocal harmonies, and pronounced experimental leanings.
