Biography
Goth Babe channels the rhythms of an off-grid existence—living in a customized camper—into both his hazy alt-rock guitar numbers and understated synth-pop productions, where lyrics dwell on routine introspection and time spent in nature. After issuing his 2016 debut “Wasted Time/Sunshine,” the indie artist concentrated on concise releases rather than full albums. Electronic textures soon entered the mix, notably the propulsive rhythms heard on the 2017 EP Pacific and its 2018 follow-up Pacific II. Those unhurried compositions kept evolving through the layered guitar-and-software arrangements of 2021’s Protect Our Winters and 2022’s Santa Catalina, culminating in his first proper long-player, Lola, in 2024.
A native of Memphis, Griff Washburn composed the tracks “Wasted Time” and “Sunshine” while attending Middle Tennessee State University and later recorded them at a Nashville studio. He withdrew from college after one year to focus on music in Nashville, then moved on to Brooklyn. Early in 2016 he issued the material himself as the Wasted Time EP under the Goth Babe name. Additional standalone tracks and the October 2016 Shall We EP appeared over the ensuing years, yet momentum on the East Coast faded when modeling opportunities arose. A Calvin Klein campaign briefly pulled him into that field before he returned to guitar, his creative drive revived by relocating to the West Coast.
Once settled in Los Angeles, Washburn cultivated an audience and eventually acquired a truck-and-camper rig outfitted with solar panels, a wood-burning stove, and a compact studio. Having never traveled beyond San Francisco, he set out to discover the Pacific Northwest from this mobile base. The resulting 2017 and 2018 EPs Pacific and Pacific II documented that period. In 2019 he delivered the Goth Babe releases Mt. Hood and Smith Rock while embracing a routine of surfing, climbing, hiking with his dog, and songwriting between tour dates. He later bought raw acreage in Oregon to establish a permanent foothold.
Further U.S. travels yielded the 2020 EPs North Coast and Mt. Bachelor, followed in 2021 by Protect Our Winters. The singles “Encinitas” and “Casita” rounded out that year, and the three-song Santa Catalina surfaced in 2022. Later that same year the throbbing synth-pop track “Taking Over the Sun” appeared as a single, succeeded months afterward by the Iceland EP. In 2023, after a long stretch of shorter releases, Washburn began assembling material for a full album, issuing several singles highlighted by the lush “Bioluminescence,” which later featured on Lola, his 2024 debut long-player.
