Biography
Electronic musician and producer Harley Edward Streten records under the name Flume, shaping atmospheric dance music that draws on house and U.K. garage traditions. Enlisting vocalists and instrumentalists from disparate styles, he advanced to headline status after his 2012 debut and the Grammy-winning 2016 follow-up Skin, both of which reached number one on the Australian album chart. Further entries on the ARIA singles tally and the U.S. dance chart arrived via joint releases with London Grammar on “Let You Know,” Vera Blue on “Rushing Back,” and Toro y Moi on “The Difference,” before his third studio album Palaces appeared in 2022 and yielded the Australian Top 20 single “Say Nothing” featuring May-A. Previously unheard material from across his career was gathered for the 2023 mixtape Things Don’t Always Go the Way You Plan.
Streten grew up in Australia and began self-producing as a young teenager. After winning a Future Classic competition several years later, he joined the imprint and issued a 2011 EP that contained the track “Sleepless.” His self-titled debut album followed in 2012, featuring contributions from Chet Faker, Jezzabell Doran, and Moon Holiday among others; the set topped the ARIA chart at home, earned double-platinum certification there, and reached the United States via Mom + Pop. A November 2013 deluxe edition added verses from Ghostface Killah, Boldy James, M.O.P., and Killer Mike, while that same month saw the Lockjaw EP with Chet Faker and a U.S. tour alongside Disclosure. ARIA honors for Producer of the Year, Breakthrough Artist, and Best Dance Release arrived the following month.
Touring occupied much of the next two years until the 2015 single “Some Minds,” a collaboration with Miike Snow’s Andrew Wyatt. Skin, released in 2016, incorporated work with AlunaGeorge, Little Dragon, Vic Mensa, and Beck; its lead track “Never Be Like You” featuring Kai became a global success, matched in impact by “Say It” featuring Tove Lo. The album returned Flume to the summit of the Australian chart and peaked at number eight on the Billboard 200. Later that year the companion EPs Skin Companion I and Skin Companion II surfaced, spotlighting Isabella Manfredi and Pusha T respectively. Multiple trophies followed, including the 2016 ARIA Awards for Album of the Year, Best Dance Release, and Best Independent Release, plus the 2017 Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Album.
Early 2019 brought the mixtape Hi This Is Flume, which included appearances by HWLS, slowthai, JPEGMAFIA, and SOPHIE and earned a third Grammy nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Album. The London Grammar collaboration “Let You Know” reached the Australian Top 40 that June. August introduced the split EP Quits with Reo Cragun, and September delivered “Rushing Back” featuring Vera Blue, which climbed to number eight on the ARIA singles chart and re-entered the Billboard dance/electronic Top 20. Comparable placements greeted the Toro y Moi collaboration “The Difference” in early 2020 and “Say Nothing” featuring May-A in early 2022; the latter served as the flagship single for the May 2022 album Palaces, which also featured Damon Albarn and Caroline Polachek. The 2023 mixtape Things Don’t Always Go the Way You Plan collected recordings made between 2012 and 2021 and added partnerships with Panda Bear, Injury Reserve, and Isabella Manfredi.
