Biography
Electronic music producer Charlie Yin first drew widespread notice through his Giraffage project, whose lush, introspective tracks built from samples reflected tastes spanning R&B, hip-hop, J-pop, and ambient textures. Residing in the San Francisco Bay Area, Yin had previously issued three self-released online albums of chiptune-inspired material under the alias Robot Science from 2009 to 2011. Adopting the Giraffage name in 2011, he issued the digital EP Pretty Things and the album Comfort on his own, while also supplying remixes for Slow Magic; the intricate, euphoric quality of these pieces quickly attracted attention from numerous online outlets and music sites.
A 2012 collaboration with Orlando-based producer XXYYXX yielded the single “Even Though,” issued early that year on the French label Kitsuné Music, after which the pair embarked on a joint European tour. Needs, Yin’s second full-length under the Giraffage moniker, appeared in early 2013 and intensified his focus on sensuous R&B while sharpening his studio craft. Festival appearances followed, along with support slots for Phantogram on their fall 2013 U.S. run. Yin’s remixes of mainstream pop, dance, and R&B tracks continued to circulate, with his 2014 reworkings of R. Kelly’s “Ignition [Remix]” and The-Dream’s Love/Hate album generating nearly as much online discussion as his own compositions. He also opened shows for Porter Robinson across North America in 2014 and closed the year with the No Reason EP on Fool’s Gold Records. The well-received EP later received physical editions on CD and 12" vinyl, marking Giraffage’s first appearance on tangible formats.
In 2015 Giraffage issued the buoyant single “Impression of You,” a collaboration with Viceroy and Patrick Baker, via Dim Mak Records, and followed it with the No Reason Remixes EP on Fool’s Gold. After the 2016 release of “Bring Me Your Love,” Yin signed with Counter Records in 2017; Too Real, his first album for the imprint, surfaced that October and included guest contributions from Japanese Breakfast, Matosic, and Angelica Bess.
