Sango prefers to label his productions merely as beats and lets listeners sort through an eclectic range that encompasses current R&B and hip-hop, underground dubstep, funk carioca, and atmospheric electronica. The Seattle-based artist has lent his skills to tracks by Bryson Tiller, Tinashe, PinkPantheress, and Wale, yet his own catalog has drawn consistent praise. Beyond numerous self-released efforts, he has issued music through Soulection on the 2013 project North, Last Gang on the 2018 guest-laden In the Comfort Of, and RCA on the 2019 Xavier Omar collaboration Moments Spent Loving You. Subsequent work grew more varied and frequently drew from global sources, evident in 2020’s Da Rocinha 4, the 2022 joint album 97 with Brazilian singer Juniper, and the regionally focused Great Lakes Influence.

Kai Wright entered the world in Washington state, passed much of his early years in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and later studied at Western Michigan University fifty miles farther south. Upon completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in graphic design, the future producer already had double-digit short-form releases as Sango and enjoyed support from Soulection, which had put out North in 2013. He also edged toward wider audiences by co-producing “Cold Sweat” for Tinashe’s Top 20 2014 album Aquarius and supplying “The Sequence” to Bryson Tiller’s T R A P S O U L, another Top 20 set that arrived late in 2015. After returning to Seattle, Wright kept issuing material, including the 2016 Xavier Omar collaboration Hours Spent Loving You and the 2017 self-released De Mim, Pra Você. Last Gang Records released 2018’s In the Comfort Of, which showcased appearances by Smino, Jesse Boykins III, and James Vincent McMorrow. The following year he and Omar delivered the RCA-issued sequel Moments Spent Loving You.

In the ensuing period Sango maintained a steady and stylistically wide output that included globally inflected releases such as Da Rocinha 4 and Shango alongside the Michigan-centric Great Lakes Influence. The full-length 97 with Brazilian singer Juniper appeared next, after which he concentrated on 2023 singles featuring femdot., Earlly Mac, and Masego.
