Dutch electronic artist San Holo shapes genre-fluid EDM productions and songs whose finely woven textures often carry emotional weight, spanning future bass, ambient, trap, and pop. Early notice arrived in the 2010s when he shared remixes of material by Dr. Dre, Outkast, and further hip-hop acts. Launching the Bitbird label under his own direction, he broke through with the 2017 debut Album1, which entered the Top Ten of Billboard's electronic albums chart and earned two International Dance Music Awards. The 2021 release BB U OK? again placed high on the dance charts, after which Existential Dance Music appeared in 2023 and the single "Glow" arrived in 2024 featuring Au/Ra.

Born Sander van Dijck in 1990 in Zoetermeer, The Netherlands, he originally planned to join a band yet found solo work more practical. Production studies took him to Codarts University for the Arts in Rotterdam. Following graduation he served as a ghost producer, and after achieving results in that role he chose to proceed independently. A growing SoundCloud audience prompted the Don't Touch the Classics remix series, which reworked classic '90s and 2000s hip-hop tracks such as Dr. Dre's "The Next Episode" and thereby enlarged his following. The debut EP Cosmos surfaced through Heroic Recordings in 2014. Around the same period Walt Disney threatened legal steps against the stage name, citing infringement on the Star Wars character. Heroic defended the name as an affectionate tribute to the franchise, and Disney eventually withdrew the claim. The next year Monstercat issued the second EP Victory. Subsequent singles appeared on an assortment of labels including OWSLA and Spinnin. Although those imprints were progressive in outlook, they offered less creative latitude than desired, prompting the creation of Bitbird. Third EP New Sky arrived on Monstercat in 2016, coinciding with a first North American tour that included dates at Coachella and Miami's Ultra Music Festival.

March 2018 brought the single "Right Here, Right Now," which incorporated additional production from Taska Black. Album1, the first full-length project, followed in September of that year and reached number seven on the Billboard Top Dance and Electronic Albums chart. In the wake of its release Holo received Breakthrough Artist of the Year and Best Electronic Album honors at the International Dance Music Awards.

Quarantine conditions during the Covid-19 pandemic led to a sequence of tracks that began with "(If Only I Could) Hold You" in March 2020. All such material was gathered on the Stay Vibrant EP by May 2020. The sophomore full-length BB U OK?, postponed by the pandemic, appeared in June 2021 and included appearances by Bipolar Sunshine, American Football, Weezer, and additional guests; it peaked at number three on Billboard's Top Dance/Electronic Albums Chart. A deluxe edition followed in 2022. Existential Dance Music, the third studio album, was introduced in 2023 by the single "Bring Back the Color" featuring AURORA, while "Glow" featuring Au/Ra emerged in 2024.
