Biography
Hailing from New Zealand, QUIX—real name Jono Schnell—has built a reputation as a sought-after DJ and electronic artist whose glittering productions blend trap with EDM. His first online traction came in 2015, after which he shifted base to Los Angeles and delivered his opening EP, Heaps Cool, via Dim Mak in 2017.
Born Jonathan “Jono” Schnell and raised in Auckland, he spent his childhood in a Christian home that included partial homeschooling. Music entered his life as a pre-teen, leading to initial band performances by age nine. Electronic dance music caught his attention at fourteen, prompting early experiments with original material. At eighteen, RL Grime’s “Flood” drew him toward trap, inspiring him to produce his own bass-and-drum recordings. While employed days as a landscaper, he devoted evenings to tracking and Auckland DJ sets. The moniker QUIX, drawn from the German meaning of his surname and denoting speed, was adopted during this phase. Online uploads led to discovery by New York producer Party Thieves, who secured management representation and paved the way for the move to Los Angeles.
Alongside the 2017 Dim Mak release of Heaps Cool on Steve Aoki’s label, QUIX collaborated with Boombox Cartel, Gucci Mane, and KRANE while remixing tracks for Skrillex, Rick Ross, Future, and additional artists. The follow-up EP Illusions appeared in 2018, featuring Bok Nero, David Shane, and Aviella. In 2019 he released the single “Stronger” with Elanese.
