Biography
Operating out of Los Angeles, Henry Steinway adopts the RL Grime alias whenever he fuses hip-hop, electro, drum'n'bass, and assorted bass-heavy styles. As a founding member of the WeDidIt Collective alongside Shlohmo and D33J, he has joined forces with Baauer, Skrillex, Big Sean, and additional artists. His first full-length arrived in 2014 as the well-received Void, an eclectic blend that drew from garage, EDM, and R&B. The 2018 follow-up NOVA reached the Billboard 200 and spotlighted Chief Keef, Miguel, and Joji. In 2019 Steinway launched his own Sable Valley imprint, issuing multiple compilations that spotlighted emerging talent, and he also dropped joint tracks with Whethan and NERO. The ambitious, experimental PLAY surfaced in three installments throughout 2023.
Early in the 2010s Steinway first drew notice through big room house productions issued as Clockwork and through the heavier bass tracks he released as RL Grime. After launching the RL Grime project in 2011 via a string of online uploads, he formalized the endeavor with the 2012 Grapes EP on WeDidIt Collective. Fool's Gold put out the High Beams EP in 2013, which included a guest spot from rapper Problem. RL Grime supplied remixes of Benny Benassi's club staple "Satisfaction" and Jamie Lidell's "What a Shame," then toured alongside Baauer, Ryan Hemsworth, and Jim-E Stack. The 2014 full-length debut Void incorporated contributions from Big Sean, electro-house producer Boys Noize, and indie act How to Dress Well. A subsequent remix collection appeared, along with the What So Not collaboration "Tell Me" and a remix of the Weeknd's "The Hills." The solo cut "Aurora" arrived in 2016, as did the Skrillex and What So Not joint "Waiting."
Ahead of the second album Nova, 2017 brought "Reims" and the Miguel-assisted "Stay for It." Two further singles, "Pressure" and the bass-heavy "Undo" featuring Jeremih and Tory Lanez, surfaced in 2018. WeDidIt issued NOVA that July, with additional appearances from Chief Keef, Ty Dolla $ign, and Joji. The set reached number one on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums chart the following month. December of that year saw two volumes of NOVA remixes. In May 2019 an all-instrumental edition titled NOVA Pure appeared. The next year Steinway released the Sable Valley Summer, Vol. 1 compilation, which highlighted label artists including Whethan, Jawns, and LeMay; two additional volumes followed in 2021 and 2022. A 2022 collaboration with NERO yielded "Renegade." RL Grime advanced further with the 2023 full-length PLAY, packed with guest features and issued across three parts—APEX, GRID, and RUSH—drawing contributions from 070 Shake, Baauer, JAWNS, and Bea Miller.
