Biography
Enigmatic masked DJ/producer Marshmello crafts groove-oriented electronic dance music built on thick synth layers and booming basslines that routinely cross into mainstream territory. Echoing the hidden identities of figures such as Deadmau5 and Daft Punk, he appears in a full-head marshmallow covering. Although he initially kept his identity private, his profile surged in 2015 after he began uploading tracks to online platforms. Performances soon followed at New York’s Pier 94, Pomona’s HARD Day of the Dead festival in California, and Miami Music Week. His debut album Joytime entered the Billboard electronic/dance chart at number five, after which Joytime II and Joytime III each reached number one on the dance albums tally. Further success arrived through pairings with Selena Gomez on “Wolves,” Khalid on “Silence,” and Bastille on the platinum-certified “Happier.” A solo milestone came in 2019 via his groundbreaking Fortnite Extended Set inside the game, while 2021’s Shockwave returned him to the dance-chart top ten. In 2023 he joined Brazil’s Tropkillaz for Mellokillaz and claimed his first number-one Latin crossover project, Sugar Papi, atop the Dance/Electronic Albums chart. His second collaboration with Kane Brown, “Miles on It,” led the dance charts in 2024 and preceded the release of The Roots EP along with the 2025 Space Laces single “Rave Repeater.”
Marshmello first surfaced in 2015 by posting material on SoundCloud, among them reworkings of Zedd’s “Beautiful Now” and Jack Ü’s “Where Are U Now.” Skrillex amplified his reach by reposting the track “Find Me,” drawing larger audiences and leading to high-profile appearances at Ultra Music Festival and California’s HARD Day of the Dead. The 2016 compilation Joytime, gathering earlier releases, peaked at number five on the Billboard electronic/dance albums chart and number one on a digital electronic albums ranking; it included the single “Keep It Mello” with rapper Omar LinX. After Marshmello’s Electric Daisy Carnival set that year, Tiësto briefly stepped out from beneath the mask in jest, falsely claiming to be the masked artist. Marshmello pressed on with performances and singles, eventually founding his Joytime Collective imprint. Additional 2017 collaborations arrived with Khalid on “Silence” and Selena Gomez on “Wolves,” both reaching the top thirty and earning platinum certifications globally.
In 2018 Marshmello paired with British vocalist Anne-Marie for the multi-platinum single “Friends.” Following his second album Joytime II, he issued the standalone track “Happier” featuring Bastille’s Dan Smith; it climbed into the top three in the United States, United Kingdom, and Australasia. As that song gained traction, Marshmello also charted with the 2019 Fortnite Extended Set, a thirty-minute mix from his in-game concert viewed by millions. “Happier” eventually topped the Billboard electronic chart and reached number two on the Hot 100. A subsequent link-up with Chvrches on “Here with Me” marked the indie group’s highest-charting single. Cross-genre efforts continued with “Light It Up” alongside Tyga and Chris Brown, “One Thing Right” with country artist Kane Brown, and “Rescue Me” with A Day to Remember. The last appeared on Joytime III, issued in July 2019 with contributions from Slushii, Flux Pavilion, Elohim, and Wiwek; the set landed at number fifty on the Billboard 200 and led the dance chart.
February 2020 brought the Svdden Death collaboration “Crusade” and the buoyant Halsey track “Be Kind.” The next year Marshmello worked with Australian singer-songwriter Vance Joy on “You,” Kentucky rapper 2KBABY on “Like This,” and Iranian singer-producer Arash on “Lavandia.” His fourth album Shockwave arrived in June 2021 featuring Juicy J, Megan Thee Stallion, Subtronics, and others, rising to number three on Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart and earning his first Grammy nomination. Non-album singles filled 2022, including “Numb” with Khalid, “Sah Sah” with Nancy Ajram, and the punk-tinged “American Psycho” with Mae Muller and Trippie Redd. The previously unreleased 2019 Juice Wrld collaboration “Bye Bye” surfaced that year, followed in 2023 by “Party Jumpin’” with Jamie Brown. Additional 2023 releases paired him with Polo G, Farruko, and Brent Faiyaz, while Mellokillaz appeared with Tropkillaz. Partnering with Sony Latin and guests such as Farruko, Anuel AA, and Nicky Jam, Marshmello delivered the Latin dance crossover album Sugar Papi, which topped the Electronic Albums chart.
March 2024 saw the Kane Brown duet “Miles on It” lead the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart and reach number twenty-nine on Mainstream Top 40. The Roots EP followed in November, spotlighting Pluko, Hamdi, and Lil Jon among its contributors. In December 2025 Marshmello teamed once more with dubstep producer Space Laces for the single “Rave Repeater.”
