Biography
An electronic production duo consisting of Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall, the Chainsmokers fuse indie, dance, and pop elements into a chart-dominating style that has generated numerous multi-platinum singles. Their first official release arrived in January 2014 with the dance-chart-topping "#Selfie," a track that both celebrated and skewered 2010s narcissism while moving over ten million copies and generating hundreds of millions of video views thanks to cameo appearances by Snoop Dogg and David Hasselhoff. Subsequent early singles such as "Kanye" and "Let You Go" built on that momentum.
In 2015 the pair issued the Bouquet EP through Disruptor Records, an indie-leaning project highlighted by the double-platinum "Roses," which reached number one on the Top Dance Songs chart and earned Billboard Music Award nominations for Top Dance/Electronic Artist and Top Dance/Electronic Song. After performing more than 300 concerts that year—including appearances at Lollapalooza, Firefly, Tomorrowland, and Ultra—they returned in 2016 with the platinum-certified "Don't Let Me Down," a collaboration with Pittsburgh pop singer Daya that topped the Billboard dance chart and later received a Grammy. They also participated in the Tilt Tour, the first fully fan-sourced outing, and began hosting SiriusXM's monthly Nice Hair mix show as well as the weekly YouTube EDM 15 program.
The duo reached even greater heights later that summer when "Closer," featuring Halsey, ascended to number one and stayed there for twelve weeks, surpassing the previous record set by Drake's "One Dance" and ultimately achieving twelve-times platinum status. They assembled the Collage EP around that hit and two other Top Three singles, adding collaborations with Phoebe Ryan, XYLØ, and Charlee. Two additional 2016 Top Ten pop successes, the five-times-platinum "Roses" and the Grammy-winning "Don't Let Me Down," further cemented their commercial standing.
By 2017 Taggart and Pall had tempered their high-energy EDM sound with increased pop and indie-rock influences while still scoring platinum success via "Something Just Like This," their collaboration with Coldplay. That track appeared on their debut full-length, Memories: Do Not Open, which entered the Billboard 200 at number one and also featured Emily Warren, Jhene Aiko, Florida Georgia Line, and the single "Paris." Beginning in 2018 they adopted a monthly single-release strategy, first collected on the Sick Boy EP—which debuted just outside the Billboard 200 Top 50 before expanding into a full album with guests Drew Love, Kelsea Ballerini, Aazar, NGHTMRE, and Emily Warren—and later on World War Joy. The latter 2019 set reached number 65 on the Billboard 200 and included Hot 100 collaborations with Illenium, Lennon Stella, Bebe Rexha, and 5 Seconds of Summer.
After contributing to the 2020 soundtrack for Words on Bathroom Walls alongside composer and producer Andrew Hollander, the Chainsmokers returned to the Top 40 in January 2022 with "High," the lead single from their fourth album So Far So Good. Released that May and featuring production from Ian Kirkpatrick and Ethan Snoreck plus writing input from Coldplay's Chris Martin, Emily Warren, Faheem Najm, and Akon, the project topped the Billboard Top Dance/Electronic albums chart. Further 2023 singles "Make Me Feel" with Cheyenne Giles, "My Bad" with Shenseea, and "Self Destruction Mode" with Bludnymph were gathered on the October release Summertime Friends, which peaked at number 15 on the Top Electronic/Dance Albums chart. In 2024 they issued the No Hard Feelings EP, containing "Addicted" with Zerb and Ink as well as "Friday" with Fridayy.
