Biography
Dan Griffith produces, writes songs, and spins records as Gryffin, crafting expansive, emotive dance-pop that fuses live instruments with synthetic textures. Pianos and guitars surface regularly inside his melodic house and future bass constructions. Early attention arrived through reinterpretations of material by Tove Lo and Maroon 5; original tracks began appearing in 2016, generating more than a dozen entries on relevant charts through partnerships with Carly Rae Jepsen, Aloe Blacc, and AlunaGeorge. Most of those cuts were gathered on his first album-length project, Gravity, issued in 2019. Subsequent releases such as the 2020 single “Cry” alongside John Martin and “Safe with Me” featuring Audrey Mika kept him on the charts, while a 2022 link-up with OneRepublic yielded “You Were Loved.” Several of these later recordings formed the core of his sophomore album, Alive, and he added joint efforts with Rita Ora and Armin van Buuren during 2024.
Griffith studied classical piano and performed in bands while also mastering guitar. After completing an electrical engineering degree at the University of Southern California he turned fully toward production and eventually settled in Los Angeles. His first international live appearances took place in 2015, the same year he delivered remixes of Tove Lo’s “Talking Body,” Maroon 5’s “Animals,” and Years & Years’ “Desire.” Gryffin’s initial original release, “Heading Home” with Josef Salvat, entered Billboard’s Dance/Electronic Songs chart in 2016. Later that August “Whole Heart,” featuring Bipolar Sunshine, followed, and in 2017 he issued “Feel Good” with Illenium and Daya. Two further 2017 singles, “Love in Ruins” and “Nobody Compares to You,” extended his run of dance-format successes. The 2018 track “Winnebago,” recorded with Quinn XCII and Daniel Wilson, preceded “Just for a Moment” featuring Iselin; both appeared on the EP Gravity, Pt. 1, which also included Elley Duhe and Stanaj. “Remember,” a collaboration with Zohara, became his first entry on the Billboard Dance Club chart.
Continuing the pattern in 2019, Gryffin teamed with Calle Lehmann and Slander on “All You Need to Know” and with Aloe Blacc on “Hurt People.” Additional charting cuts—“OMG” with Carly Rae Jepsen and “Baggage” with Gorgon City and AlunaGeorge—preceded the October release of Gravity on Geffen. The album collected most of his prior singles plus new work with Marina, Seven Lions, and Maia Wright, ultimately topping Billboard’s Dance/Electronic Albums chart. Standalone releases continued with 2020’s “Cry” and 2021’s “I Want Love” (Two Feet) and “New Blood” (Boy Matthews). In 2022 he delivered “You Were Loved” with OneRepublic and “Caught Up” with Olivia O’Brien before issuing Alive in November. A 2023 interpretation of Gabrielle’s “Dreams” was followed by “Oceans” featuring Kid Joi. During 2024 Gryffin released “Last of Us” with Rita Ora and joined Armin van Buuren for “What Took You So Long.”
