Biography
Norwegian electronic producer Kygo earned global acclaim for his approachable fusion of pop sensibilities and progressive house grooves. Rising swiftly during the 2010s, he emerged as a central architect of the tropical house aesthetic, showcased through reinterpretations of Seinabo Sey's "Younger," Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing," and Ed Sheeran's "I See Fire." Steady single output and stage work helped cultivate a growing audience, culminating in the May 2016 release of his debut album Cloud Nine, which topped charts throughout Europe and the United States while earning multi-platinum certification in Norway on the strength of the single "Firestone" with Conrad Sewell. Additional chart successes followed with "It Ain't Me" featuring Selena Gomez, "First Time" alongside Ellie Goulding, and "Born to Be Yours" with Imagine Dragons. Kygo sustained his dominance on Norwegian charts via 2017's Kids in Love and 2020's Golden Hour, the latter of which reached number 18 on the Billboard 200. His unannounced fourth album, The Thrill of the Chase, arrived as a surprise in 2022 and restored him to the upper reaches of the dance charts. Joint efforts with Ava Max and Nile Rodgers further propelled the 2024 self-titled album KYGO to number one in both Norway and the U.K.
Born Kyrre Gørvell-Dahll in Singapore and raised across several continents, the Avicii-inspired producer and DJ began piano lessons in childhood before encountering electronic music during his teenage years. After leaving college, he committed fully to music. An international Sony deal positioned him on RCA in the United States and Syco in the United Kingdom, leading to the 2014 launch of his first proper single, "Firestone." The track, featuring lead vocals from Conrad Sewell, hit number one in Norway and entered the Top Ten across multiple other regions. The following year, his Parson James collaboration "Stole the Show" became his second consecutive Norwegian number-one solo hit, while "Nothing Left" featuring Will Heard delivered his third chart-topper in that territory later in 2015.
These releases, together with further singles spotlighting Labrinth, Kodaline, and James Vincent McMorrow, paved the way for the May 2016 arrival of debut full-length Cloud Nine, which quickly claimed the top spot in Norway. That same month, two tracks he produced with Stargate appeared on Fifth Harmony's 7/27. In February 2017, the Selena Gomez collaboration "It Ain't Me" reached number ten on the Billboard pop chart. "First Time," another duet, this time with Ellie Goulding, arrived soon afterward, and both songs featured on the 2017 Stargazing EP, which also included a remix of the U2 track "You're the Best Thing About Me."
Later in 2017, Kygo delivered his second album, Kids in Love, incorporating appearances by John Newman on "Never Let You Go," OneRepublic on "Stranger Things," and Wrabel on "With You." The 2018 Kids in Love (Remixes) collection supplied alternate versions and edits from that album plus the new track "This Town" featuring Gucci Mane and Sasha Sloan. He ended the year with the Imagine Dragons collaboration "Born to Be Yours" and prepared for his subsequent album campaign.
After issuing "Think About You" with Valerie Broussard in 2019, Kygo achieved an unexpected international crossover success via his remix of Whitney Houston's "Higher Love," which nearly topped the U.K. singles chart and registered strongly across Europe, Asia, and Australia. Further prominent collaborations built toward the June 2020 release of third album Golden Hour. Beyond "Higher Love," the project showcased contributions from Zara Larsson, Tyga, OneRepublic, Kim Petras, Zac Brown, and additional artists spanning multiple genres. Golden Hour climbed to number 18 on the Billboard 200 and number two on the Top Electronic Albums chart.
Further standalone tracks emerged, such as "Gone Are the Days" with James Gillespie. In 2021, singles including "Love Me Now" featuring Zoe Wees and "Undeniable" featuring X Ambassadors appeared. Kygo opened 2022 with the buoyant single "Freeze," which entered Norway's Top 40. All preceding material fed into his fourth album, The Thrill of the Chase, issued as a surprise in November 2022 and peaking at number two on the U.K. dance charts and number four on Billboard's Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart. A remix of the classic Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson single "Say Say Say" surfaced in 2023.
"Whatever," a January 2024 release with Ava Max, ascended to number one in Norway and served as the lead single for Kygo's fifth album, the self-titled KYGO. Arriving that June, the set incorporated guest spots from Sigrid, the Jonas Brothers, Julia Michaels, Zak Abel, Nile Rodgers, and others. It reached number one in Norway and the U.K. while landing at number two on Billboard's Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart. Kygo began 2025 with the OneRepublic collaboration "Chasing Paradise."
