Greek-Belgian siblings Dimitri and Michael Thivaios, who perform together as the EDM duo Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, launched their careers early by spinning records in neighborhood clubs beginning at age 14. A few years afterward they took on presenting duties at the Belgian station BeatFM. In 1999 the pair departed Belgium for a tour across Europe, basing themselves first in Mallorca to build recognition on the continental club scene, then relocating to Halkidiki, Greece, and finally settling in Ibiza in 2003. There they secured regular spots at the established venues Privilege and Space, which helped cement their reputation. After becoming resident DJs at The End and Amnesia in Zante, Greece, in 2006, they issued their debut single, “La Cocaina (Eivissa 2007),” on white label the next year. Additional tracks appeared in quick succession, yet wider attention arrived once Axwell discovered their 2008 rework of Dave Lambert & Housetrap’s “Work That Body” and invited them to remix Abel Ramos’ “Rotterdam City of Love” for Axtone Records. The brothers hosted Tomorrowland in 2010 and, the following year, joined Afrojack and Nervo for the hit single “The Way We See the World.” They introduced their own Smash the House label in 2011. A run of releases on Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak imprint ensued, capped by seven Beatport number-one placements in 2013 alone. The duo also notched domestic and regional successes such as “Chattahoochee” and “Find Tomorrow (Ocarina),” both of which reached number two in Belgium. Their first U.K. chart entry came in 2014 when the Martin Garrix collaboration “Tremor” peaked at number 30. Continued singles and major festival appearances led to a number-two ranking on DJ Magazine’s Top 100 DJs list in 2015. While completing their first album that year, “The Hum” with Ummet Ozcan and “Higher Place” featuring Ne-Yo both topped the Belgian charts and the Billboard dance tally. In 2016 the Dutch production duo W&W teamed with them on “Arcade,” which led the Beatport Top 100 EDM chart as well as appearing on the Belgian and French singles charts. Further tracks including “Melody,” which featured Steve Aoki and Ummet Ozcan, and “Stay Awhile” maintained their visibility, and the pair improved on the previous year’s DJ Mag placing by taking the top spot—the first time a duo had done so. October brought the Diplo collaboration “Hey Baby”; Diplo had earlier appeared alongside the brothers at their House of Madness event in Ibiza.
