Biography
Justin Blau, performing as 3LAU, works from his Las Vegas base as a widely sought DJ and electronic producer whose tracks blend electro, dubstep, and house elements. Mashup productions occupied his early 2010s efforts before he turned to original material, shaping emotionally resonant dance pieces intended to energize audiences and ease sensations of disorientation. Worldwide touring has placed him on bills at festivals including Electric Zoo and Lollapalooza, while partnerships with Botnek, Audien, and Bright Lights have generated releases through dance imprints such as Dim Mak, Armada, Anjunabeats, and Astralwerks. His philanthropic profile includes founding the non-profit label Blume, and he directed all proceeds from the 2018 album Ultraviolet to cancer research. Fresh singles continue to appear, among them the 2021 emotional club track “Everything” made with Funkin Matt and Frawley as well as 2022’s “Too Late For Love.”
Born in Syosset, New York, in 1991, Blau was raised in a household that encouraged artistic pursuits and took up singing along with guitar and piano during childhood. Relocating with his family at age 13 to Las Vegas, Nevada, he maintained his musical activities until a 2011 trip to Sweden introduced him to electronic dance music. By year’s end he had chosen the 3LAU alias, started creating original mixes, and uploaded mash-ups to YouTube. That same year saw the launch of the first Dance Floor Filth installment and placements of his tracks by noted DJs such as Porter Robinson and Bob Sinclair. Demand for his skills grew rapidly, resulting in numerous official remix commissions that included Zedd’s “Spectrum.”
April 2014 brought the Dim Mak single “Vikings,” a joint effort with Botnek. Subsequent releases encompassed 2014’s “We Came to Bang” featuring Luciana, 2015’s “Alive Again” with Emma Hewitt, 2016’s “Is It Love” featuring Yeah Boy, and others. The 2016 track “Fire” united him with Said the Sky and Neonheart. Three 2017 singles—“On My Own,” “Walk Away,” and “Star Crossed”—previewed the February 2018 arrival of debut album Ultraviolet. “Touch,” a collaboration with Carly Paige, achieved modest chart traction, and a remix collection followed later that year. Rejoining Paige in 2019 yielded the upbeat single “Would You Understand,” while additional 2019 tracks comprised “Better with You” alongside Justin Caruso and Iselin plus “Tokyo” featuring Xira. Early 2020 saw the Grabbitz-assisted single “At Night” with Shaun Frank, followed later by the solo cut “Apocalyptic.” The 2021 release “Everything,” co-produced with Funkin Matt and voiced by Frawley, arrived together with “Worst Case” featuring Cxloe, and October 2022 introduced the standalone single “Too Late For Love.”
