Biography
French electronic music producer David Guetta first gained attention amid the early-21st-century surge of DJs who fused Daft Punk’s polished house style with an electroclash edge. He secured global mainstream breakthrough during the late-2000s EDM peak via the chart-topping albums One Love and Nothing But the Beat; his house tracks remained dance-chart staples throughout the 2010s and frequently spotlighted high-profile pop and rap figures, among them regular partners Nicki Minaj, Sam Martin, Sia, Morten, Chris Willis, Rihanna, Kelly Rowland, and Afrojack. With the final two of those collaborators he captured a pair of Grammy Awards in 2011. He issued the EP New Rave in 2020 and joined Sia on the buoyant worldwide synthwave/pop single “Let’s Love.” In 2022 he reached the Billboard Hot 100’s upper tier with “I’m Good (Blue)” featuring Bebe Rexha, then reunited with the vocalist the following year for the Grammy-nominated “One in a Million.”
Born Pierre David Guetta in Paris, the artist had already been spinning mainstream records across France when a 1987 radio airing of a Farley Jackmaster Funk cut fundamentally altered his approach. He recorded the song, tested it at a subsequent performance, and watched it empty the dance floor. Conditions relaxed the next year once acid house reached France, enabling Guetta to launch his own successful club events. At one such night in 1992 he encountered Chicago house veteran Robert Owens, then touring Europe. Guetta played Owens several of his productions; Owens selected one to vocalize, resulting in the modest club hit “Up and Away,” which circulated in garage sets for the ensuing four years.
Guetta’s insistence that worthwhile music emerged only during relaxed moments postponed any official output until the 2001 release of “Just a Little More Love.” The track introduced American gospel vocalist Chris Willis, whom Guetta had met during the singer’s French holiday. The single smoldered quietly for two more years, resurfacing first in an electro rendition and later via Wally Lopez’s high-energy remix. Around the same period Guetta circulated an unauthorized rework of David Bowie’s “Heroes,” retitled “Just for One Day.” After Bowie authorized an official version, the track became a major success. Guetta included the newly legitimate cut on his debut mix album, Fuck Me I’m Famous, titled after his popular Ibiza party series.
The seemingly unhurried DJ eventually compiled his own material for the 2004 album Just a Little More Love on Astralwerks. Guetta Blaster appeared the same year, followed by Poplife in 2007. Chris Willis supplied lead vocals on the latter set, which yielded numerous dance singles across several territories. Fuck Me I’m Famous: International, Vol. 2 arrived in July 2008, previewing the sleek soundscape of Guetta’s summer Ibiza residencies. One year later he delivered the platinum-certified One Love, whose singles included “When Love Takes Over” with Kelly Rowland, “Sexy Bitch” with Akon, and “Gettin’ Over” with Chris Willis.
At the 52nd Grammy Awards in 2010, Guetta earned five nominations: two tied to One Love and three stemming from his contributions to the Black Eyed Peas’ global smash “I Gotta Feeling.” One Love was subsequently expanded as One More Love, adding a second disc of remixes and fresh material. A star-studded roster including Akon, Lil Wayne, Flo Rida, Usher, Chris Brown, and others appeared on the 2011 album Nothing But the Beat, whose songwriting drew inspiration from dramatic rock acts such as Coldplay.
Guetta launched three singles on his Jack Back imprint in 2014; they were collected on that year’s Lovers on the Sun EP. Later in 2014 he released his sixth studio album, Listen. Possibly reacting to his unexpected status as an EDM forefather, the record ventured beyond electro-house conventions, incorporating hip-hop, alternative rock, R&B, and acoustic elements while enlisting an eclectic range of guests: Nicki Minaj, Emeli Sandé, Sia, the Script, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. The project was reissued in 2015 as Listen Again, augmented by additional tracks and remixes that featured “Bang My Head” with Fetty Wap and Sia.
A steady flow of singles followed over subsequent years. In 2016 Guetta supplied the official UEFA Euro anthem “This One’s for You” featuring Zara Larsson, which led the charts in France, Germany, and Switzerland, alongside “Shed a Light” with Robin Schulz and Cheat Codes and “No Worries” with Disciples. The next year brought further team-ups: “Light My Body Up” with Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne, “Another Life” with Afrojack, the platinum-certified “2U” with Justin Bieber, “Complicated” with Kiiara, and “Dirty Sexy Money” with Charli XCX and French Montana. Early 2018 yielded Sia collaborations on a remix of “Helium” and the new track “Flames,” plus another Top Ten entry, “Mad Love,” with Sean Paul and Becky G. His seventh album, the straightforwardly titled 7, appeared in September and incorporated prior singles such as “2U” and “Flames” while adding contributions from Anne-Marie, Bebe Rexha, J Balvin, Jason Derulo, Martin Garrix, Jess Glynne, Steve Aoki, Lil Uzi Vert, G-Eazy, and many others; a bonus disc gathered a dozen tracks recorded under his Jack Back alias.
At the start of 2019 Guetta paired with Spanish DJ Tom Staar for “This Ain’t Techno.” The EP New Rave surfaced in July 2020 and contained “Kill Me Slow” featuring Morten. Later that year he rejoined Sia for the Top Ten dance single “Let’s Love.” Additional well-received releases arrived, among them 2021’s “Heartbreak Anthem” with Galantis and Little Mix, 2021’s “Remember” with Becky Hill, and 2022’s “Crazy What Love Can Do” again with Hill and Ella Henderson. Also in 2022 Guetta issued “You Can’t Change Me” with Morten and Raye and topped Billboard’s Hot Digital Songs chart with “I’m Good (Blue)” alongside Bebe Rexha. In 2023 he appeared on multiple charts with “Baby Don’t Hurt Me,” a collaboration with British singer Anne-Marie and American rapper Coi that sampled Haddaway’s 1993 hit “What Is Love.” He reunited with Rexha on “One in a Million,” which reached the Top Ten of Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart. By year’s end both “Baby Don’t Hurt Me” and “One in a Million” had received Grammy nominations for Best Pop Dance Recording. In 2024 Guetta scored a Top 40 hit via his partnership with OneRepublic on “I Don’t Wanna Wait.” Further non-album tracks followed, including “Feeling Good” with Hypaton and “Man in Finance” with Girl on Couch and Billen Ted.
