Innovative electronic/hip-hop producer UZ first surfaced under a veil of secrecy during 2012, based in undisclosed locales while shielding his true identity and limiting all photographic appearances to images where masks fully hid every facial detail. Although UZ’s personal history stayed deliberately hidden, the tracks he generated proved far more direct, quickly establishing a series of dark, intense bass-driven productions that many later credited as foundational to the emerging trap sound. Beyond issuing a steady flow of original material directly online, his profile rose fast enough to draw remix assignments from major figures such as Ice Cube, DJ Shadow, Flosstradamus, and additional high-profile names, each stamped with UZ’s distinctive approach. An extensive touring calendar soon carried performances to venues and festivals worldwide, leading to the 2016 creation of Quality Good Records, a label centered on joint projects with rising talents. The imprint debuted that year via the Magellen EP, followed in 2017 by UZ’s debut full-length album Layers, which included guest contributions from Gia, Kevin Flum, and Two Fresh. After a subsequent remix edition of Layers appeared, 2018 brought The Rebirth, a record markedly lighter on outside features than the earlier release.
