Biography
Texas producer Medasin launched his creative pursuits at age 12, advancing rapidly from initial experiments to polished skill by 16 and drawing early notice through reinterpretations of material from Post Malone and Portugal. The Man. His take on the 2017 DJ Khaled single “Wild Thoughts,” featuring Rihanna, proved compelling enough for Khaled to issue it under his own name. Via these reinterpretations, standalone tracks, and work behind other performers, he shaped a dense, rhythm-driven approach to electronic music that reached fuller expression on his first album-length effort, Irene, issued in 2018.
Born Grant Nelson in 2001 and raised in Dallas, Texas, he first experimented with sound inside his family’s computer room at age 12, only to enter rehab two years later amid substance issues. Once sober, he returned to production with fresh focus, generating numerous reinterpretations while entering regional contests that linked him to fellow creators. Those connections led to a partnership with multi-instrumentalist Masego on the 2016 release The Pink Polo EP. Balancing further prominent reinterpretations, Nelson completed his debut album, naming it Irene after the counselor from his outpatient program; the project appeared during summer 2018.
