Biography
Laxcity is the performing alias of Joshua Mbewe, whose downtempo electronic productions stand out for their expressive character and meticulous layering of detail. Tracks on projects such as the 2018 album Catharsis combine crisp drums, enigmatic voices, and inventive sound design to deliver a restorative, reassuring quality even as they evoke an expansive spectrum of unsettled feelings.
Born in Zambia, Mbewe relocated to England at age nine. As a child he played drums and keyboards in church before shifting to computer-based electronic music creation. His first EP, the self-titled Laxcity, surfaced in 2016 and was followed by Introspection in 2017. During 2018 he journeyed to Montreal, where he gave his initial live performance as opener for Robotaki and Said the Sky. Majestic Casual issued Catharsis, his debut full-length album, late that year, with appearances by emawk and Lani Rose. The Purity EP then arrived via ALT:Vision Records in 2019.
