Biography
Frenship formed as an electro-pop duo rooted in Los Angeles, drawn together by a common taste for gentle synthesizers and uplifting rhythms. Their 2016 single “Capsize” earned platinum certification, after which the pair delivered their first full-length album, Vacation, in 2019. Two years later they issued a pair of new singles, among them “All My Friends.”
James Sunderland and Brett Hite first crossed paths as coworkers at the fitness retailer Lululemon, where each quickly became an admirer of the other’s music. That connection sparked a songwriting partnership focused on bright, optimistic electronic pop. The duo’s earliest public offering appeared on SoundCloud as “Knives,” a collaboration with Norwegian tropical house producer Matoma. The track spread rapidly online, prompting the upload of a second song, “Nowhere,” which drew comparisons to new wave pioneers Tears for Fears while incorporating modern house textures. Momentum continued with the premiere of “Carpet,” which Sunderland later linked to a stressful chapter in his personal life. The follow-up single “Capsize,” featuring singer/songwriter Emily Warren, quickly went viral, reaching charts in several countries and securing platinum status in the U.S., New Zealand, Australia, and Sweden. Columbia Records released their debut EP, Truce, in fall 2016.
In 2018 the duo issued the single “LOVE Somebody” and launched the Good Morning, Goodbye Tour. Early the next year they released another independent track, “Wanted a Name” featuring Yoke Lore, which appeared on Vacation, their first album, later in 2019. Sunderland and Hite resurfaced in September 2021 with “All My Friends,” a song reflecting their experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. Later that year they collaborated with Lauren Sanderson on the single “Try.”
