Formed in Sacramento by siblings Kevin and Jeff Saurer, the electronic duo Hippie Sabotage began shaping hip-hop instrumentals during the mid-2000s. In those formative years they partnered closely with area producer Chase Moore, blending the city’s multicultural atmosphere into their hip-hop productions and supplying beats to rappers including J. Leake and Yukmouth. Further sessions connected them with Chicago figures such as Calez of 2008ighties and Kami de Chukwu. Their sound gradually broadened to embrace wider influences, resulting in tracks for artists like Alex Wiley on “Something to Say” and C Plus on “Callin’ Me.” The pair introduced original work via the Vacants EP at the start of 2013, then issued the singles “White Tiger” and “Sunny” later that year. Global notice arrived in spring 2014 after Ellie Goulding shared their remix of Swedish pop singer Tove Lo’s “Habits (Stay High)” across social platforms. The track surpassed one million streams following the endorsement, prompting several additional releases throughout the year, among them the Johnny Long Chord EP and The Sunny Album. Their second studio album, Providence, appeared in 2016 alongside the Options EP recorded with Cubic Z. The Saurers resumed their partnership with Z for the 2017 release Drifter.
