Hailing from the Slovenian coastal town of Portoroz, the DJ and producer known as Gramatik blended the pulsing rhythms of electro with the intricate, sample-driven beats characteristic of boom-bap hip-hop, yet his path inevitably led him toward Brooklyn. An older sibling’s extensive array of cassettes introduced the adolescent Gramatik to recordings spanning funk, jazz, R&B, and additional styles ideally suited for club play. Having begun crafting beats on his personal computer at the age of thirteen, his work during his later teenage years attracted a dedicated following and caught the notice of Pretty Lights, the producer based in Colorado. This kindred artist welcomed Gramatik to the digital imprint bearing the same name, issuing the album Beatz & Pieces, Vol. 1 during 2011. The subsequent year saw the arrival of the #DigitalFreedom EP as well as Gramatik’s relocation to a new residence in Brooklyn. Establishing the Lowtemp imprint in 2013 allowed him to accelerate his output, distributing beat-centric collections such as SB#4 and Coffee Shop Selection while also putting out full-length projects including The Age of Reason in 2014 and Epigram in 2016, both of which appeared on Billboard’s Top Electronic Albums chart.
